TRAFFIC ALERT UPDATES: Highland Park Way, West Seattle Bridge

5:43 PM: If you’re about to head home … you might want to wait a while. We’ve received multiple reports of a backup on Highland Park Way, uphill/westbound, where the 911 log shows a crash blocking a lane; also, SDOT has just tweeted about a crash on the westbound West Seattle Bridge, Fauntleroy end.

6:25 PM: We don’t have an update on HP Way yet, but SDOT says the westbound West Seattle Bridge incident is now cleared.

The accident on HP Way was fairly severe. A car broadsided a van, with the car ending off the side of the road. It was getting towed at 6pm when my wife went by. The van was blocking both uphill lanes. Three police cars were there directing traffic through one of the downhill lanes.

No medic units dispatched, so no major injuries. Wasn’t even on SDOT’s radar in terms of traffic tweets – I think they might not know how major a commute arterial HP Way is. – TR

When I drove by at 5:30 a person was in a neck brace and there was an ambulance there…

Thank you. Private ambulances (AMR) are called for non-life-threatening injuries. Seattle Fire medic units, if the injuries are major. While the private ambulances’ dispatch isn’t logged publicly anywhere, every single dispatch by SFD is, so that’s how we are able to at least say no medic units were involved. Sometimes a medic unit is called and then dismissed, with a private ambulance making the transport, but in this case, the only SFD unit dispatched was Engine 11 (the firefighters are all also trained to provide basic medical treatment if necessary) – TR

To be specific I’m referring to your comment that SDOT may not know how major a commuter arterial HP Way is.   Its funny and not so funny…

I agree. I think SDOT has demonstrated they have no clue on HP Way. If one of them had to drive it, they would be going into work requesting changes and wondering why it had not already been done.

Sorry, comment time is over.
