Spring cleaning? Here’s what to set aside for Recycle Roundup

That flyer (PDF version here) shows what will, and won’t, be accepted at the next Recycle Roundup at Fauntleroy UCC Church, now just a month away. Judy Pickens sent it along with the early reminder – 9 am-3 pm on Sunday, April 24th, you’ll be able to drop off your recyclables for free, as 1 Green Planet sets up at the church parking lot (9130 Fauntleroy SW) for the day, as they do twice yearly, in partnership with the church’s Green Committee.

SIDE NOTE/QUESTION: If you are – or know of someone who is – planning a SHREDDING event this spring, please let us know as soon as you can – we are frequently asked if one is coming up, but haven’t received any announcements yet.

It still baffles me as to why televisions are excluded while computer monitors, Speakers, “Radios & equipment” and “Electronic components” are accepted. A television is the same as a computer monitor with a tuner built into it, all of which would be individually accepted.

I assume that’s paper shredding mentioned in the side note?  If so, I think everyone owes it to themselves to spring for their own good quality paper shredder, one that really grinds the paper down to mulch-level and can handle things like paper clips, staples and credit cards.  Nothing makes it so easy on the identity thieves as when folks just toss old bills, receipts and unsolicited credit card applications in the recycle bin.  Maybe I’m paranoid, but I shred anything that even has my address on it, much less my name.

The simple explanation about TVs is that 1 Green Planet does not get paid by manufacturers for TVs it collects at recycling events, only for those dropped off at its Renton warehouse.  To spare West Seattle residents the drive to Renton,  we direct people to the Burien Goodwill, a bonafided drop-off point with Washington E-Cycle.  It’s much closer,  you can go any day of the week, and Goodwill pockets a little money from the TV manufacturers.

Sorry, comment time is over.
