West Seattle Crime Watch: Another smashed window

The photo’s from Adam at 50th and Charlestown. He reports:

Writing to let you know that someone smashed my wife’s car with a huge rock sometime between last night and this morning. We woke up to find the pictured damage. We have no idea who would do this. No attempt to steal anything as far as we can tell — just pure vandalism.

We’ve filed a police report and called insurance, but given the rash of vandalism in WS lately, it would be nice to catch the people doing this.

The “rash of vandalism” has included other incidents on their block, Adam adds. We’ve had multiple reports in the past eight days, starting a week ago with car- and house-window-shooting/breaking incidents in multiple West Seattle neighborhoods. Our first reports were a week ago Sunday, followed by more last Monday.

I’m sorry to hear that. I found a small blue handbag/large wallet and black folder (CD or digital device case?) and business cards / others papers scattered along 20th Ave SW just before Thistle. I phoned the Seattle police and they sent someone to pick it up. Not sure if anything was stolen out of your car but thought I’d let you know.

That’s terrible. Sorry to hear about your (wife’s) car. I installed some camera’s recently, looking at my car. I hope to catch someone doing this kind of stuff. They were cheap and easy to install. I suggest them.I’m sad also for the people that are doing this vandalism. Really. If dropping a rock, or breaking a car window is the high point of your life, if it’s the way that you get a rush or feel empowered, or at the least unique and momentarily special then you haven’t been given enough chances in life, yet, to experience so much more that’s out there. I feel bad that someone is so limited in their options and hasn’t been offered personal life tools (education, arts, relationships, sports, etc) that once participated in give people (yes everyone) much higher highs and motivations.  It’s what people mean when they say, ‘Get a life’, but in these cases it’s not snide, but sad. I hope they do get a life because they’re missing out, and annoying the rest of us with their stunted attempts to participate. Come join the life party smashers. We’d love to show you around, it’s pretty awesome.

I am the submitter of this, and we do have security cameras.  Unfortunately they didn’t see anything — the one camera that might have has had issues with its night vision feature, so that one was pitch black.  None of the other ones were able to see anything that far out on the street. For anyone considering buying security cameras, get good HD ones.  Our cameras caught someone stealing packages off our porch in 2014, but the resolution wasn’t high enough to do anything but show a person taking things.  The cheaper ones just don’t have the clarity to make them useful.

I would recommend getting a nest cam -use to be drop cam.  $199 + annual service.  Night vision -has to be done with an external case (and still isn’t great).  We actually caught someone vandalizing a neighbors car last year.  Worth every penny.  The newer cameras have way better resolution / color.

Car parked in our driveway got broken into tonight.  54th Ave SW in West Seattle. The door was unlocked so they simply climbed in and rummaged through. Only thing missing is registration…. Anyone else have anything like this happen?

Sorry to hear it. Somebody’s car gets prowled somewhere in West Seattle at least once a night, the police logs show – but it’s really important that you report it to police, even if the registration is the only thing they took. – TR

REMEMBER  if you have a garage-door remote, put in your purse or on your key ring …if it is left in the car it is a set of keys for your house!!!

Sorry, comment time is over.
