FOOD FOLLOWUP: Meander’s to open Thursday

ORIGINAL STORY: Two weeks ago, chef Miranda Krone announced she was returning to West Seattle for a fourth incarnation of Meander’s Kitchen, this time at 6400 California SW, where the proprietors of Kokoras Greek Grill had decided to retire (their restaurant had long been listed for sale). Early today, she announced via Facebook that the official Meander’s opening will be Thursday (February 25th). Read full details here, including cuisine and hours.

(Side note: Multiple readers pointed out that the building/lot at 6400 California SW, also home to The Wash Dog, has just been put up for sale for $1.1 million. The flyer notes both tenants have recently signed 5-year leases, with a provision for 6 months’ notice if a redevelopment plan emerges. The site is zoned for 3-story mixed-use. Online files do *not* show any proposals.)

UPDATED FEBRUARY 25: Via Facebook, Meander’s says it’s now planning to open Friday morning at 8.

Her letter sure doesn’t leave one with the dewing she will want to do this very long. Good luck though.

dewing? I don’t know that word.

We read the same letter, and I didn’t get the impression that she was in it for the short haul…

Hope she makes it this time. Sure miss her food!

Not related to Meander’s, any word on The Hydrant opening up?

Looking for a new brunch place to try with Meanders

If you think about how many times Meanders has moved and how quickly they are able to open while navigating the city and county regulatory/permitting systems, and compare that with other restaurant’s one to three month delays , it seems like the owners should open a consulting business to teach other restauranteers how to avoid delays and open quickly.  This would be a useful service.

      I agree!

  • AT February 21, 2016 (6:41 pm)

sooo, no mention of Greek food…

    • Sue February 22, 2016 (11:15 am)

I think she said something in a previous post about learning his recipes. I know they’re offering a dinner menu, so very possibly will be greek on the menu. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

      • AT February 22, 2016 (4:01 pm)

@ Sue, yes and the Eater.com article made it sound like the menu would be Greek-heavy (and one of the family members from Kokoras was staying on.  But the Facebook post linked to here makes no mention of anything Greek, unless the cuisine coincides with her boat mates’ favorites.  Her FB post made it sound like she’ll cook whatever she feels like cooking for as long as she feels like being there.  I can’t help but suspect Stacy is in for a disappointment.  Exact same?  I’m skeptical!

From the Eater post:  “Apparently Kokoras’ owner, Spiros Rouvas,
is moving back to Greece, but there’s a consolation: Rouvas will be
teaching Krone some of his recipes to use at the latest incarnation of
        Meander’s.

On Kokoras’ Facebook page, Rouvas’ son Stacy tells a slightly different story, suggesting he couldn’t afford to take over the restaurant and insisting
that Kokoras “IS NOT GOING AWAY” and “the food and everything will be
the exact same.” Hopefully the transition, however it occurs, is a
        smooth one.”

He posted this before his parents informed him of the sale, I believe. Miranda addressed it on her Meander’s Facebook page. That’s not say they won’t carry over any Greek food – I don’t know – just that Stacy was not fully informed at the time of that status update.

Meanders was okay.  Part of the appeal originally was the small, smokey Jade West space it was at coupled with Miranda chatting while she was cooking. That was cool.  After that, it kind of faded in my opinion with the multiple moves and carousel of cooks.  Consistency suffered.  Really liked her oatmeal pancakes with the yogurt berry compote.  Hopefully she will bring that back.  That being said, losing Kokoras is a much bigger loss.  Such great food, colorful family & great West Seattle spot. I feel like Bev Place will probably suffer a bit as quite a few of us would go there to get some great Greek food & drink some equally great beer.  All in all, I kind of feel like this is a net loss.

She certainly does meander. Perhaps that’s part of her shtick!

  • CAP February 22, 2016 (4:01 pm)

Will the name of the restaurant change?

    • WSB February 22, 2016 (5:14 pm)

CAP – sometime in the past few hours (between the time we headed toward Alki on California SW, and returned home) the Kokoras name was painted over on the awning. Didn’t see anyone working so don’t know if the new name will be up shortly or in a day or two. – TR

  • Beth Sue February 23, 2016 (5:11 pm)

We just drove by and the Meanders name is now up.

    • WSB February 23, 2016 (5:42 pm)

Thanks! We’re both off to meetings but if anyone photographed the sign, images are now uploadable in WSB comments …

Any word on the future of the Wash Dog?

    • TDe February 25, 2016 (10:02 am)

Hello:   Wash Dog here….    We are still going strong, with a 5 year lease that will carry over to any new building owner.  If a purchaser happens to be a developer and we suspect that could be the case, they will give us 6 months notice after they have acquired the building and we will have to move.   We are currently pro-actively researching space options that might be available so that we’re not caught short when and if the time comes.  However this turns out in the end though, we are committed to staying in the West Seattle area as The Wash Dog has been in this area for many years and we love serving the awesome dogs of West Seattle!  We will keep you posted of any changes, via the WS Blog, Facebook and Twitter.

      • Lori February 25, 2016 (6:35 pm)

That’s great! At least we know you’d still be in WS, even in the worst-case scenario. Yay!

  • Karen February 26, 2016 (8:06 am)

Meanders is back and as amazing as usual. Their dinner menu is wonderful!

  • David February 27, 2016 (3:27 pm)

Holy smokes, I had their chicken dish and banana cream pie on opening night, and my god, it was amazing. It was my first time, so not sure how it compared to before, but I thought the food was fantastic.

  • Rick February 27, 2016 (6:29 pm)
