West Seattle Crime Watch: Windows shot out

7:20 PM: Reader report from Ron:

Sunday afternoon 1/31. someone had target practice with my back window of our car. We heard the car alarm sound and when we checked our car, there were BB-sized dents around the window. Unfortunately the back window was gravely shot and is not expected to recover. Amazing that this took place in broad daylight. That takes a special kind of person. We are located on the 6700 block of 37th Ave SW in Gatewood [map]. Hopefully we are the only ones who were victimized by this type of idiocy.

10:37 PM: In comments, Ryan reports a similar incident, 7700 block of 32nd Avenue SW.

MIDDAY MONDAY: And more reports in comments. We’re working on a followup.

Our neighbor had a broken car window we noticed this afternoon at 32nd and Kenyon. Not sure what the situation was, but worth mentioning based on proximity.

      Probably us :(

Unfortunately, you were not the only ones!  A Seattle PD officer knocked on our door around 5:00pm today informing us that our window was “shot out” as well. We are located 7700 block of 32nd Ave SW. The officer believed it was some random person running around doing target practice with their BB gun. Other than the inconvenience of it all, everything is fine. If anyone else discovers a similar problem with their vehicle, the Seattle PD provided us a case number that you can reference: 2016-037126. Also, much thanks to Seattle PD officer W.J. McKenzie (6106) for being proactive, finding our broken window, and knocking on our door to let us know. That kind of consideration and service is truly appreciated.

Sorry to hear it, Ryan. I’ll link to your comment and change the headline to windows plural … TR

:-( That was about the time we drove by, sometime around dusk. I’m sorry this happened. My other half was outside most of the afternoon and I don’t think he heard anything either.

Our front window also fell victim to BB gun target practice (Genesee). The officer mentioned that he is en route to similar incidents in the neighborhood.

Sorry to hear that. Did it happen last night? This morning? Or? – TR

Sunday night – between 6 and 6:15pm. We actually got a picture that possibly shows the car/person and shared it with police. It’s a bit concerning given that our couch is right there. Luckily only the outer window broke.

I live in the 4000 block of 21st Ave SW on Pigeon Point. Tonight sometime between 8 and 10 three windows on the drivers side of my truck (including canopy) were shot out by a BB gun. They also did quite a bit of body and paint damage to the side of the truck, I think they hit it about 15 times. Just wanted people to be on the lookout for idiots driving around with a BB gun wrecking others peoples stuff. Thanks.

Same thing occured on 4000 block of 26th ave. At least 2 cars had multiple windows shot out between 5 and 7pm. Apparently they went on quite a spree. SPD said they have a description of the vehicle.

Also here in the 5600 block of 26th Ave SW. BB in a side window, unfortunately its a 30 year old classic car, its going to be a challenge to replace it. A night of mischief for a some,  several weeks of claims, inconvenience, missed work and $$ for everyone else…

Sorry to hear about all this. Anyone who reads this but doesn’t want to comment (and hasn’t e-mailed us already), I’d like to hear from you to get more of an idea of the scope; while I’m following up with police for an update later today, without individual incident numbers (and this will be generally on Tweets by Beat as “property damage” and not specifically “shot-out windows”), we’ll have a bit of a challenge getting the full scope. Thanks in advance for the info. – TR

My car was also hit last night on the 4000 block of 26th Ave.  Broke out both windows on the left side. Also just noticed that  my door was hit with a BB, chipping the pain  Thanks to officer Dela Cruz #6290 who notified me of the vandalism. Hope they get the idiot punks!!!!!

My wife and I experienced the same problem tonight.  We were sitting in our living room around 6:45pm, heard what sounded like someone throwing rocks at our window, twice at first, then a third time that was louder.  When we went outside to see if we could see someone out there we saw that someone had shot a BB or pellet through the first exterior pane of our double pane window, perfect round little hole.  Called the police and filed a report, they had another call reporting a similar circumstance not so far away.

Sean – I’m writing the followup right now – where did this happen?

      • Sean February 1, 2016 (9:41 pm)

Hi WSB, it happened at 45th and Findlay

  • Aaron February 1, 2016 (9:41 pm)

Are you kidding me!? I really hope they catch them. I can’t believe they are doing it a second night!! Any idea what the car looks like?

  • Sunshine February 1, 2016 (10:02 pm)

2 cars tonight!   Our car had a window smashed and the car parked behind me on 3600 block of California Ave tonight.    I don’t know the exact time, but it was between 6:00pm and 8:10pm tonight.

    • WSB February 1, 2016 (10:04 pm)

Sorry to hear that. Will add to the followup we’ve just published atop the site. Everybody be sure to report to police if you haven’t already – TR

      • Sunshine February 1, 2016 (10:09 pm)

Just filed online with SPD.      They do not send an officer if the vandalism is not actively taking place.    I submitted a photo of my car and the car behind me if that helps anyone.

  • Stan February 1, 2016 (11:01 pm)

I think maybe that could explain the sounds I heard last night and the damage to the rear window of my neighbor’s truck.  We are on the 6000 block of 34th Ave SW.

  • John February 3, 2016 (6:30 am)

Sometime between Sunday night and Tuesday afternoon we had the back window of our suburban completely shattered. The car was parked along Alki Ave SW.  I don’t know if it was a bob gun or if someone smashed it. $350 to get it fixed!

Sorry, comment time is over.
