West Seattle Crime Watch: Stolen, found, and not-yet-found edition

In West Seattle Crime Watch this afternoon – first, two car-prowl reports received over the weekend from the same area of Arbor Heights, 37th/98th vicinity:

Robert unintentionally left a case of teaching materials in his car – and by morning, they were gone. Someone found some of the items more than a mile away, near 35th/Thistle, but he is still looking for a “black Travel Pro wheeled carry-on” and “an instructional manual for Phonics Boost, a few children’s books–Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, a couple of George and Martha books–and a few more, and some manila file folders with notes. They also took a tool tote with a bunch of teaching tools, markers, calculator, etc.” The items that were recovered with a few of his other items, by the way, included “a nitrous tank and some key rings (and) also a receipt of some sort from Volkswagen.” If you have seen any of the items Robert is still missing, please comment.

In the same area, Danny reports that someone stole change from his car: “I am not sure if I didn’t lock it as there was no visible signs of damage done to it. I also heard there is some kind of universal key that can open car doors without the alarm going off. … There was also mail from several blocks away scattered in from my house. There is also a house that is being built that has a Honey Bucket in front of it that had mail from my neighbor across from me in it two Thursdays ago. I am wondering if this could be related. … There was also Halloween decorations and a few plants stolen from my porch Halloween night.” (Regarding the “universal key,” this story was referenced in a recent comment thread about the topic.)

Another car-prowl report, from Aaron:

Just wanted to report that my friend’s car was broken into a week or so ago in from of my house on 38th and Charlestown. They broke both passenger side windows and stole her work bag from the back seat. Nothing of value to them, but she had a lot of important paperwork for the insurance company she works for. Sucks to hear about so many break-ins.

One more report, not definitively connected to crime but likely, as many stolen bikes are dumped this way:

FOUND BICYCLE: Jenny found a “Kulana Makamaka, black with red splash guard in the back, missing one in the front. From the images I’ve found of this bike online, it looks like it probably had a front splash guard when new.” Missing one? She says it has some stickers the rightful owner should be able to identify.

Hi. my car at 36th and Cloverdale was also ransacked last evening as well. the VW receipt might be from my car as well as some other random things that are missing. let me know where you found the items. I am looking for my prescription glasses that were taken.

Hi CW. The items were dumped in a yard near 35th and Thistle. They were in a bag. I found some of my things there along with some things that weren’t mine. I saw keys, but no eyeglasses. The police came today and picked everything up. It was on Saturday the 31st that I picked the stuff up. My car was hit on Friday, 10/30. If your car was ransacked on 11/1, it was after this.

Thanks Robert. busy block i guess. hope you recover your stuff.

My car was also rummaged through the night of the 30th. The majority of the stuff taken was ditched at the end of our alley near 35th and Cambridge since it has no value unless you are a runner. They did keep a shopping bag and micro usb cable and clip on hat light.

    Hello,

Both of my cars were hit on two different nights. First car they took a checkbook, old cell phone, and old ipod. They were clean about it as we didn’t realize until they tried to cash one of our checks in White Center. This was on or before the 28th. They then hit my other car and got a cell phone. This was on the 29th. I did notice that they dropped a stick of deodorant in my driveway. This was in the area of 35th and Thistle. These bastards have been busy.

Robert — I have your suitcase — it was dumped in my yard at 37th and Roxbury. I will email my contact information to Tracy at WSB rather than post it here. It’s wet but otherwise ok — and empty. I had accidentally left my garage door open on Friday/Saturday and the same folks got in and ransacked it — took a bike and a pair of sunglasses is all. Didn’t bother calling the police since property crime isn’t a priority for this town and its not enough to even make a claim over.

Thank you, GRG, forwarded. But might I plead with you to change your mind and spend a few minutes to at least file an online report? The stats at the very least DO make a difference in resource allocation, and while SPD has precious few right now, without the stats to say “this is an epidemic,” there won’t be enough to back up the precinct leadership’s pleas for more.

Thanks, WSB, for encouraging GRG to make an online report to SPD who need the info for lots of reasons, and you might just get lucky like I did. WSB posted my plight and helped return a stolen bike to my house several years ago, which I haven’t forgotten! It takes a village, so let us all know so we can help.

Yes,it’s worth reporting to the police and the blog. Thanks to the WSB and Gary, an alert teader,I got my case back. Also, after reporting this online, I called the police because I ended up with things that weren’t mine. The officers were at my house within the hour and their response surprised me. They said I shouldn’t have moved the screwdriver I found in my driveway. It seems they do investigate.

Following up, I attempted to file and online report as you both suggested — however the crime in my case isn’t eligible. It involved illegal entry into a garage (I did leave the door open but it was still an illegal entry), and the value of items was greater than $500.
