Water outage Sunday for 130 homes/businesses on west side of Junction

Thanks to the residents who let us know about doorhanger notices they received this week – like the one at right – with news of an all-day water-service outage this Sunday (October 4th). They wondered how widespread the outage would be, and thought it merited wider mention, in case somebody who’s affected misses the notice, and in case it might affect visitors/customers of the homes/businesses. So we checked with Seattle Public Utilities whose spokesperson Elaine Yeung replied:

This is not an SPU construction project but SPU crews are installing multiple new ¾” taps services as well as a water main line valve for a private development. This work will have a fairly large shutdown involving 130 customers (including businesses) on 44th Ave SW from SW Dakota St south to SW Edmunds St and Rutan Pl SW. All customers who will be impacted by the shutdown will have received a door hanger with the date and time of shutdown.

So far, everyone we’ve heard from has been given a time frame of 8 am-4 pm. (If you’re a business in the area and this will affect your operation/hours at all on Sunday, please let us know so we can include that information when we mention this again in our daily preview on Sunday.)

I received this notice and I’m frustrated that this project is being done on a SUNDAY. Why not during a weekday when people are gone? I don’t get it. I’m further irritated that this is because of a private development. Thisv isn’t an SPU project that will better my utility services. And please don’t come at me with, “First World Problems”. Yes, I know I am fortunate to have running water. That’s not the issue. The issue is that some private developer (is it the apodments on 44th mayhaps?) is inconveniencing my Sunday for their own benefit and profit!

    Thank you for covering this!

Actually sorry that my house is not in the affected area. I need to replace the main cold water piping coming into the house, and having no water anyway would make it easier to sell to the rest of the family!

There is no need to be upset.

What compensation for lost service will SPU be providing to customers in the affected area? Seems we should be getting time and a half for all day Sunday. Who is paying those SPU crews working all day Sunday? Will developer fees (let us hope they are paying big time) be rebated back to SPU’s affected customers? Who paid for the preparation and distribution of 130 door hangers? Your public utility $$ at work.

Turning off water heating appliances is important to prevent burning them out from accidental use of the water.

MercyMoi asked a very good question: Why Sunday?

Construction noise, congestion, rude workers, and now this. And our water is likely to be discolored when restored. Disgusted about all of it.

I know I have not but have any others actually gone out and literally protested directly thru waving signs or there’s means? Or do we just complain here in this theatre about theses new construction projects and how they impact us?

Just got home from out of town to find that we may have no water tomorrow. We’re on Rutan Place, but have no notice hanging of the door. Called to clarify at the number SPU inclùded on the pictured door hanger. Recording says it’s only answered M-F/8-5 of course! We have a party planned at the house that we’d need to cancel if no water. Your city government at work again. What a screw up! Could the neighbors at least get a week’s notice and an explanation of why they’d choose a high-impact weekend daytime utility disruption? GEESH!

BJG – SPU should have an emergency number you could call – 206-386-1800 is on the SPU website as a 24/7 line. – Tracy

Thanks,Tracy! Got a live person at that number and we have only 4 unlucky neighbors on the whole of Rutan Pl. One short water line affected. Thanks for the help. We’ll likely be sharing water and services tomorrow.
