BIZNOTES: Copper Coin turns 3; Wingstop progress; Pica’s successor

Three West Seattle biznotes this afternoon:

HAPPY 3RD ANNIVERSARY, COPPER COIN: The Admiral eatery is celebrating its third anniversary, and manager Gregg Graham e-mailed to say they’re planning specials all day tomorrow, including:

*A tasty, special one-off ‘Copper IPA,’ brewed for the occasion by Lowercase, and offered at 1/2 price all day Wed.!

*The debut of a new slew of awesome artisan sandwiches, served up on our fresh house ciabatta baked at the Coastline bakery and also offered 1/2 price all day Wed!

Copper Coin is at 2329 California SW.

WINGSTOP MOVING AHEAD: Almost three months after Eats Market Café moved out of Westwood Village, citing lease loss, there’s movement in the plan for Wingstop to move into that space. City files now show an application to proceed with “tenant improvements” for the chicken-wing franchise restaurant.

JUNIPER TO EX-PICA: Almost seven months after the abrupt closure of Pica in The Junction – also described as a lease-loss situation – a new tenant is about to open in that space at 4155 California SW:

That sign in the window announces Juniper, A Natural Nail Bar. No website yet, but via Facebook, Juniper says, “We are proud to be the first nontoxic nail bar in West Seattle!” and mentions a November 4th opening date.

Sigh – the last thing in the world I personally want in WS is yet another nail salon.

    • WSB October 27, 2015 (2:10 pm)

PP, if this is indeed the area’s first non-toxic nail salon – I haven’t heard of one before – that’s an important niche for customers and employees, given some of the research that keeps emerging. ** Craig, we asked Pica’s proprietor to please let us know if and when he found someplace new … so far, no word.

Best to Juniper in their new space, but I miss Pica. Wish they’d find a new home in WS, but I suspect that’ll never happen.

  • Mightymoh October 27, 2015 (2:18 pm)

The old Quadrato space will, I think, be a dumpling place. Their liquor license application in the window says something like “Thinking Man’s Dumpling (something)”. If the paper lantern above the paper in the windows means anything then it’s Chinese dumplings but I wish I knew more.

So excited for Juniper to open! A nontoxic nail salon will be a great addition to the junction. It’s worth noting that this same businesswoman owns & runs Flourish Salon & Spa on Fauntleroy which is also dedicated to organic & less toxic products. Highly recommend checking it out!

    Gluten free nail polish! ;)

  • WSgal October 27, 2015 (3:47 pm)

Any word on the Pica owners opening somewhere else?? I joined that mailing lists but unfortunately haven’t heard anything. Man do I miss Pica!!

  • MsD October 27, 2015 (5:00 pm)

Any word of anything going in the old Thunder Road Guitars or West Seattle Runner spaces? There are something like 60 new units underway on that block. Could really use some more retail. I wish I had the funds to open a coffee shop in the old Thunder Road space. There will be a lot of thirsty people when all those apartments are finished and I don’t see convenience store coffee meeting the need.

  • Peter October 27, 2015 (5:01 pm)

I ate at copper coin once. Once. I miss Porterhouse.

  • CircleK October 27, 2015 (9:05 pm)

MsD, I heard that the old Thunder Road building is going to be the second office of a Burien orthodontist.

    • WSB October 27, 2015 (9:09 pm)

There also was an inquiry in city files about possibly adding to the building. I haven’t checked back on it yet. (Update – still not a whole lot of information on what is being pursued to modify the building but it does mention that the use would change “from retail to medical.”)

I second WSgal’s comment/lament: any word on Pica? I miss that place so much, too. The owners were so nice, and their food was SO GOOD. I need a torta, stat.

One of the greatest sandwiches ever created for yet another nail salon.
Nope, that doesn’t work at all.
    —-
How many people around here get there nails done anyway? And how often? Are we the best manicured neighborhood in the world?

  • Yet another nail salon October 27, 2015 (11:48 pm)

Saw the sign for Juniper while driving by and seriously cannot believe we are getting yet another nail salon.

Just did a quick Yelp search for “nail salon” and subtracted those downtown or in Belltown and Queen Anne from the first couple sets of results. There are 19 nail salons in West Seattle. Does anyone besides me think that is just crazy?

    • WSB October 28, 2015 (12:06 am)

Why is it crazy to have a certain amount of a certain type of business, if there’s a market for it? Again … this is not “another” nail salon; it’s staking out an unserved area – “nontoxic.” That aside, while I don’t have the demo breakdown handy, let’s just make up that of West Seattle’s 100,000 people, it’s 33,000 women, 33,000 men, 33,000 children. I don’t know that Yelp is a reliable business directory but let’s say your number is right. Even assuming the salons only serve women – which I don’t believe is true, I’ve heard of men getting hand/foot care – that’s still a decent ratio. We certainly have more than 19 each in other personal-care categories such as hair salons and massage places.
      .
P.S. I just looked up the citywide number in the “nail salon” category on the business license page http://www.seattle.gov/licenses/find-a-business – 120 citywide. With about a fifth of the city’s population, if we really only have 19 (I don’t have time to count from among this group and can’t sort it further), we might be underserved!

  • Jim October 28, 2015 (12:18 am)

Have you seen the nails of some people walking around WS? We are clearly underserved. And yes, nail salons do serve plenty of men in WS, myself included. Hooray! for a new shop that appears to add value to personal care here.

  • AYMDOG October 28, 2015 (5:54 am)

Excited for Juniper. I’ve always had a hard time finding a consistent nail place in WS. As a client of Flourish, their outstanding service & products, I’m very optimistic to try aa nail place associated with Flourish. Local people, natural, non toxic…keeping it local. Not sure why you’d grumble about something positive in community. If you don’t like it… Don’t go in
I’m sure there will be plenty others of us who will

  • newnative October 28, 2015 (8:06 am)

I think some of the grump is more about Pica, who was pushed out by a landlord. The owner indicated to me at the time, he wouldn’t likely restart. I assumed that his lease being cut short meant that the building would get torn down and/or absorbed by the construction on the lot. The fact that it’s being replaced by something I personally wouldn’t patronize is even more maddening. I really liked the family-owned restaurant a lot and miss it all the time.

  • SullivanAAT October 28, 2015 (12:04 pm)

So excited about Juniper! YES another nail salon in West Seattle but a unique concept that is not only desired by many but sustainable, environmentally friendly and locally owned not to mention NON toxic! We need more of these and less toxic/dirty nail salons. It’s almost like people forget the spa industry is thriving and there is a need for jobs like this! Owner of flourish is such a great human being, more people like her should open small businesses in West Seattle! For all of you that have negativity to say about “yet another nail salon” should be proud to have someone like this running a small business in your community. Yay non toxic nails!
