West Seattle weekend scene: 3rd annual ‘Little STP’ ride

Again this year, while 10,000 people bicycled 200+ miles from the city of Seattle to the city of Portland, a West Seattle group rode the “Little STP” – from SW Seattle St. in North Admiral to SW Portland St. in Gatewood. Don Brubeck of West Seattle Bike Connections shares the photos and report:

We made it to SW Portland and back! 25 people and one dog.

Youngest: 1 year old.
Youngest on own bike part way: 4 years old.
Youngest the whole distance on own bike: 6 years old.
Oldest: into his 70s.

One family with three children rode their bikes from Queen Anne to ride with us.

A mother and daughter at SW Portland welcomed us with delicious, frozen Otter Pops! Highlight of the trip.

Especially for these young riders:

Some of the riders proceeded on to West Seattle Summer Fest – including Don, who stopped by our side of the Info Booth to say hi.

Looks like fun! way to go everyone!
I was wondering. is there some sort of cycling group/ class that helps kids learn the rules of the road, feel more comfortable riding in streets/ traffic, etc? I feel like there was something similar for adults, ie, learn how to commute by bike, here’s the best routes, etc.
I need something like that for my kid. He just learned to ride a bike, and has gotten comfortable on trails and stuff, but needs to learn bike street safety. (He’s nervous now) sometimes it seems like kids are more open to learning things from someone other than their parents who already tell them what to do all the time.

sam-c, it looks like Pedalheads has bike classes at Fairmount Park:

I’ve heard good things about them.

Sam-c: I am not sure the name of the company doing it but I have seen what looks like a daycamp teaching kids how to ride this summer at Fairmont Park. I will see if I can find out more information

That one is called Pedalheads. I almost mentioned it but don’t know if they go beyond “how to ride.”

    Found it: pedalheads.com.

Oops, sorry – bigmark’s comment didn’t show when I was reading/commenting earlier on my phone.

Thanks for the comments and recommendations. It looks like kinda what I am talking about- the Level 4 seems to mention the street skills and navigating intersections. I wonder if they go off site from Fairmont.
maybe I should have taken him on this ‘little STP’ !

This is kinda what I was thinking of when I asked the questions:
    https://westseattleblog.com/2012/07/west-seattle-bikeability-tour-40-riders-pedaled-then-discussed/

Like a bikeability tour for kids.

    thanks for the help!

Sorry, comment time is over.
