West Seattle Grand Parade 2015, final report: The people!

The summer’s biggest weekend is just a memory – but before we totally move on, one last West Seattle Grand Parade photo gallery, the biggest of all – more of the people, your neighbors, who paraded down California SW at midday Saturday!

Cora boogied her way down the route for the West Seattle Amateur Radio Club again this year – but did you know, the tower replica behind her was flashing Morse Code all the while? A little hard to see in the sunshine, but a WSARC rep we talked to before the parade thought you should know.

This year’s Orville Rummel Trophy for Outstanding Community Service recipient, former West Seattle Big Band director Donn Weaver (backstory here), got a visit from his WSBB successor, parade co-coordinator Jim Edwards, in The Junction:

Weaver also is a former longtime music teacher at West Seattle High School, which had an entry in this year’s parade, the cheer squad:

Seattle Lutheran High School sent its cheer squad to the parade too:

**30+ MORE PHOTOS AHEAD!**

Local scouts made a big showing – here’s Girl Scout Troop 45180:

Boy Scout Troop 284:

And Cub Scout Pack 793:

Among the other nonprofit participants – Furry Faces Foundation, whose founder Teri Ensley waved giant scissors as she reminded paradegoers to spay/neuter their pets because, “It’s hip to be snipped”:

Breast-cancer-fighting fundraising star Tracy Dart led her namesake Team Tracy:

Southside Revolution roller derby, now in its second year, brought skaters:

As is traditional, the parade started with the motorcycle drill teams of the Seattle Police Department and Vancouver (B.C.) Police Department.

This is the only area parade in which Vancouver’s team participates.

At the south end of the route, a show of mutual respect:

There’s one other officer we should mention – West Seattle’s own Officer Lumpy of the Seafair Clowns, who ambled over to inspect the work of parade emcee Marty Riemer:

Marty (who’s on the radio at 95.7 The Jet these days) announced the parade from the heart of The Junction, with daughter Josie at his side:

Back on the parade route, no, this is NOT “Mr. Potatohead“:

While “Spud” was on foot, a variety of wheeled entries continued to regale the crowd – from the Pathfinder K-8 unicyclists:

To the hybrid feet/wheels buses that were part of the WestSide Baby entry (executive director Nancy Woodland‘s daughter McInnis powered this one):

Here’s a young ambassador for the West Seattle Community Orchestras:

WSCO has groups for youth as well as adults, by the way. Speaking of youth – the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor and a parade sponsor too) had a big presence – on feet and on wheels – we caught Josh Sutton behind the wheel:

He’s also a member of the parade-presenting Rotary Club of West Seattle, as is Gary Potter, who we photographed walking the route:

(Potter Construction is also a WSB sponsor.) Did you see your nearest neighborhood council in the parade? This year’s group was right behind the Department of Neighborhoods‘ banner:

Last but not least, the parade is usually a good chance to get a look at your local politicians, whether on the run or already elected.

Above, that’s King County Councilmember Joe McDermott, who’s running unopposed for another term. It was his first of two local parades this weekend – he served as Grand Marshal of Sunday’s White Center Jubilee Days parade; the man he succeeded on the council, County Executive Dow Constantine, was Grand Marshal for this year’s West Seattle parade, and while we already featured him teaching his daughter how to parade-wave, here’s a view from the other end of the parade route:

Notice what he’s wearing? That’s a West Seattle Hi-Yu button, $1 to support Hi-Yu, its float, and its activities – watch for Hi-Yu royalty and volunteers at summer events, if you don’t have yours yet. Meantime, the city’s highest-ranking former West Seattleite was there too:

Mayor Ed Murray and husband Michael Shiosaki walked the route. Several City Council candidates were also part of the parade, including two walking with the 34th District Democrats, their endorsees Lisa Herbold and Shannon Braddock:

Others walking with the 34th DDs included Port Commission endorsee Norman Sigler:

And School Board Position 6 endorsee Leslie Harris:

Incumbent Marty McLaren was in the parade too. Back to the City Council race – Jody Rushmer was in front of the cannon-firing Seafair Pirates for the entirety of the parade:

We can only imagine what that might have been like:

Back to the candidates – Phillip Tavel had a multi-vehicle entry including a Nash Metropolitan driven by endorser and former candidate Dave Montoure plus a truck featuring the ever-popular Bubbleman:

Alon Bassok is a West Seattle resident in the running for at-large City Council Position 9:

We also saw West Seattleite Lorena Gonzalez, who is also a candidate for at-large Position 9. Apologies to anyone we’ve missed – between our five parade galleries, we’re pretty sure we’ve featured at least 90 percent of the entries, if not more. Previously published:
