TRAFFIC ALERT UPDATE: Northbound Viaduct open again after marathon closure

7:39 AM: Traffic reminder before we get to today’s other highlights: The northbound Alaskan Way Viaduct is closed, and scheduled to stay that way until 3:30 pm (we’ll update if it reopens earlier), because of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon/Half Marathon. See the full citywide closure list here.

4:04 PM: As pointed out in comments, 99 reopened an hour ago.

Why in the world are NB I-5 express lanes closed? Who is running this mess?

And to add to the fun — UW Commencement is at 1:30, so of course there won’t be any traffic connected to THAT.

Eek. Congratulations to the Husky grads. We’ll be covering the Sealth ceremony at 2 – about a mile from HQ.

Eastbound bridge is like a weekday morning commute. Why does this city have to close 1 or 2 main roads almost every weekend. F!!!!!!!!!

I just got back from running the half marathon. This year’s Rock n Roll race is a week earlier than normal. I believe it was scheduled earlier to accommodate the demand for hotel rooms for next week’s US Open.
The Rock n Roll marathon brings in a lot of out of town runners. I think 40% of the runners travel to this race.
Next week’s US Open is predicted to have an economic impact between $130 million to $140 million for Seattle and Tacoma.

They shouldn’t be able to close main arterials for a marathon! My 12 minute commute to work took an hour and a half today.

Eastbound still backed up from Nucor. I 5 n slows from before Boeing Field signs say 50 minutes to downtown.

Great point by Leave early, it appears that traffic planning is poorly managed in our city.

    Hwy 99 was re-open at 3:00.

Lost connectivity while covering the CSIHS graduation so couldn’t make good on the promise to update if it reopened early! Hopefully the “live” camera above conveyed the message anyway. – TR

Just out of curiosity, Chivahn, where *should* they route a marathon that has 18,000 participants?

  • ChefJoe June 13, 2015 (5:46 pm)

datamuse, they run on 99 for all of 1 mile, from Seneca up to Republican, in only the return leg. So, I guess you could have them return using 5th avenue, just like how they started the course. When the viaduct finally comes down and it becomes a finished tunnel they’ll come up with some other route sure enough (unless in-tunnel rock and roll stations are planned).

Only city I’ve ever lived in that shuts down a freeway for some runners.

Sorry, comment time is over.
