TOMORROW: Show off your ‘safe travel habits’ along Delridge during SDOT event – rewards may follow

SDOT director Scott Kubly returns to West Seattle tomorrow – this time to launch a series of “positive reinforcement” events tied to the city’s Vision Zero safety campaign. From 8-8:45 am outside the interim home of Arbor Heights Elementary (5950 Delridge Way SW) on Wednesday, according to the announcement, “Kubly, Seattle Police, and community transportation safety advocates will be out rewarding parents and kids that follow the rules of the road and practice safe travel behavior as the summer school break is days away.” If you’re caught “practicing safe travel habits,” you might get “a $5 coffee gift card and safety swag (all items grant funded),” SDOT adds. This is the first of three events around the city this week; the other two will be downtown at noon Thursday and at the Fremont Bridge on Friday morning.

I like the concept of rewarding good behavior, but not all Seattleites drink coffee.

Does SDOT think that giving away coffee coupons will convince people to vote for the levy, in spite of SDOT’s ZERO VISION regarding the Admiral Way fiasco? We have seen that SDOT is not competent to make decisions about roads, traffic, or transportation in the city of Seattle.

I think the police rewarding bad behavior with tickets is more effective.

Good behavior does not need to be rewarded by government. The purpose of government is to enable and protect a civil society, not to drown us in debt with an endless sea of entitlement programs. Good behavior is already rewarded to those who avoid injury or death by virtue of living . SDOT should stay focused on traffic engineering and reframe from social engineering.
The coffee may come from grants, but who is paying for the administrative and distribution costs? Answer: us tax payers. Who the hell deemed coffee to be so great for us anyway?

My son loved it and got some reflectors for his bike and backpack. I was glad to hear the police were there monitoring safety. There have been pedestrians hit on Delridge, and it’s great to be raising awareness of better safety in transportation around the school.

Sorry, comment time is over.
