The bird in the photo is a Rufous-sided Towhee ;)

Thank you. Every time we have a bird and its ID, I link to the wonderful Seattle Audubon web, which has photo, info, and more for just about every local species … but they don’t seem to have a Rufous-sided Towhee page. Is there another name? Or is this a rare visitor? I did find the spotted towhee there: http://birdweb.org/Birdweb/bird/spotted_towhee – TR

The bird is a Spotted Towhee.

I thought it was a spotted towhee, but am as far from an expert as could be.

Both are correct! I grew up calling it a Rufous Sided Towhee (in Missouri in the 80s).

    Q. What’s the difference between the Eastern Towhee, the Spotted Towhee, and the Rufous-sided Towhee?

    A. Time is the main factor with these bird names. Originally the Eastern Towhee and the Spotted Towhee were considered distinct species. Biologists later decided that these were simply two forms, or subspecies, of a single species, the Rufous-sided Towhee. More recently, though, opinion has swung back, and current field guides again recognize the Eastern Towhee in the East and the Spotted Towhee in the West.

Tracy, my trusty ‘Birds of the Puget Sound Region’ (Morse, Aversa, Opperman) IDs this as Spotted Towhee. The entry says: ‘It and the closely related Eastern Towhee were once treated as a single species, the Rufous-sided Towhee.’

Spotted Towhee, once known as the Rufous-Sided.

I really like this part of the WSB. I’ve learned so much from the pictures and the knowledgeable bird enthusiasts. Thank -you to all contributors.

Pajama Game was a great production. I saw it with my daughter and some of her friends last weekend and was well worth it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
