West Seattle restaurants: The Ripple Café is on the way

Just spotted this while out checking on something unrelated: Signage is up for The Ripple Café, on the way to 9007 35th SW, next to West Seattle Fish House. It’s the same spot where JC’s Deli closed at the end of last year. Via Facebook, the café’s proprietor describes it as, “(A) small but funky café … Local coffee, home-made sweet and savory baked goods (gluten-free options too!!), everything fresh, everything delicious!!”, adding that they hope to open this month. When we find out more, we’ll update this story.

ADDED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON: Proprietor Barbara Underwood comments below – including, ” In coordinating with our neighbors, we are hoping to all compliment each other and create our own little destination corner of West Seattle. We will be serving fresh sandwiches, fresh tossed salads and some baked items. We have specialty coffees and teas (Iced and Hot) but have no plans to serve espresso. We hope to consistently adjust to the neighborhood needs. Hope to see you soon.”

I’m a little surprised they would open a shop with coffee/baked goods 2 doors down from Stuffed Cupcakes and around the corner from Bird on a Wire. I wish them all the best and look forward to checking it out!

The building has been for sale for a while – we’ve reported that previously. Sale pending, per listing. No development projects pending.

blah. wish another deli was there, the whole coffee and pizza trend every 5ft in west seattle is getting old. Miss JCs Deli.

FWIW – since we have the great fortune to spend pretty much ALL our time in West Seattle – we’ve actually lost more coffee shops than we’ve gained in recent years. Especially indies. South of C & P, for example, it’s a longish jaunt to Caffe Ladro (the only indie coffee place in Morgan Junction … I still miss Butcher Block Espresso) … then nothing until Bird on a Wire … then nothing until drive-up Mocha Mojo on Roxbury … then nothing until Caffe Delia in downtown WC, and Dubsea to the east in Greenbridge. Still waiting to hear back; I suspect this café will have more. – TR

@TR Cafe Osita is on 35th between Morgan and Henderson–just to add that to the list moving on south from Morgan Junction. From Kenyon Junction, we have Ladro, Osita, Bird and now the new place within a walk.

    • WSB April 21, 2015 (2:10 pm)

Oops, sorry to omit Osita. But that’s another point … on 35th, that’s the only coffee shop north of Bird!

Darn, was hoping for a small BBQ joint or something similar to JC’s. Would love to get some good ribs or brisket without having to drive.

I thought the gluten free fad was over?

  • Paul April 21, 2015 (9:52 pm)

Hipster, I am glad no one close to you has a gluten intolerance. For many of us though, gluten free food is not a fad. If some eat gluten free by choice, I hope they continue to do so. They are making life easier for those who need those foods.

  • wb April 21, 2015 (10:00 pm)

Well said Paul. Anyone who is trying to recover their digestive health would do well to avoid gluten.

    welcome to the neighborhood!

  • RJB April 22, 2015 (11:31 am)

YEAH…the Ripple Cafe!!! Cannot wait until you open, I know it will be delish!!

  • The Velvet Bulldog April 22, 2015 (12:44 pm)

Super happy to have more walkable food options in the neighborhood. Bird on a Wire and Stuffed Cakes are both so awesome I doubt they’ll suffer for having more businesses in the vicinity.

Hi, my name is Barbara Underwood and I am opening The Ripple Cafe. I haven’t been approached by the West Seattle Blog, but I think their quote is from our Facebook. In coordinating with our neighbors, we are hoping to all compliment each other and create our own little destination corner of West Seattle. We will be serving fresh sandwiches, fresh tossed salads and some baked items. We have specialty coffees and teas (Iced and Hot) but have no plans to serve espresso. We hope to consistently adjust to the neighborhood needs. Hope to see you soon.

Hi, Barbara. I left a voice mail message on the Ripple Café phone number yesterday (Tuesday), after going by and seeing the sign, and before publishing this. I couldn’t find a website or e-mail address – usually we are redundant in both voice and e-communication – and sending Facebook notes is fairly futile given the way they separate the mailbox between friends/non-friends. But thanks for the update! – Tracy @ WSB

Welcome to West Seattle and wishing you much success!

  • H April 22, 2015 (10:42 pm)

Welcome!!! I know it sounds crazy but a few colorful wooden adirondack chairs outside, maybe like cafe Ladro on CA (but colorful), would be great.

  • Elizabeth April 23, 2015 (9:32 am)

Yeah! Looking forward to a new place! WSB..keeps us informed!

  • robert April 25, 2015 (7:34 am)

You missed the Salvadorean cafe and bakery on rox.good food and baked goodies to kill for….

  • Gyngersnap April 25, 2015 (10:17 am)

I’m having a hard time getting on board with this – although it hasn’t opened yet – but my loyalty will always be with Bird on a Wire around the corner on Henderson. I’ve been going there since it opened and I honestly don’t see how The Ripple Cafe is offering anything that I can’t get at the bird or Stuffed Cakes. I wish them luck, but not if it’s going to take customers away from The Bird.

I think the not serving espresso may be a bit of a sticking point for them.

Sorry, comment time is over.
