2015 Election: Shannon Braddock joins District 1 City Council race

Second candidacy announcement of the day for the West Seattle/South Park City Council District 1 position: Shannon Braddock has joined the race. Braddock is a West Seattle resident (as are the five other declared-so-far candidates) who has been King County Councilmember Joe McDermott‘s chief of staff for the past four years.

In her official announcement, Braddock says, “After years of serving my neighbors as a PTA mom, volunteer and staff at the County, I am thrilled for this opportunity. We have unique challenges in our part of the city, starting with a need for improved transportation and transit access. We also have an affordable housing crisis for too many seniors, young families and our diverse, growing population. And we need to enhance the work being done to provide the safety and services every child needs to learn and grow.” She lists volunteer work including a current board position with WestSide Baby and previous positions on the West Seattle Food Bank board and the Legislative Committee of the Lafayette Elementary PTA.

IN THE DISTRICT 1 RACE NOW: Chas Redmond (declared 12/20/13), Amanda Kay Helmick (declared 10/20/14), George Capestany (declared 11/11/14), Phillip Tavel (declared 2/4/15), Brianna Thomas (declared 2/11/15), and Shannon Braddock (declared 2/11/15). Filing deadline is May 15th; primary election is August 4th. West Seattle/South Park also will join the rest of the city in voting on the two “at-large” races, Positions 8 and 9.

I don’t get it. So the same people that worked with the politicians that screwed up transportation in West Seattle now want us to elect them to fix it. Beetlejuice, beetlejuice, beetlejuice

I guess you have your answer on that, then, don’t you? If you think everything is running just fine in our area, then by all means vote for the candidate(s) who are currently serving as staff to current elected officials.

I’m hearing there is another that hasn’t announced.

Finally seems like someone qualified has entered the race. I am sure more will jump in, but based on this info, Shannon is my early favorite.

@JTJ … please explain how Councilmember McDermott “screwed up transportation in West Seattle.” Just a few details and specifics please? Because otherwise, your ill-informed rant is just hot air.
    .
I thought our transportation is worse because we have more people now using the same old system and we’ve been unwilling to fund the improvements needed. But perhaps you have some special knowledge I don’t have. I’d love for you to share.
    .
I don’t know Ms. Braddock … and don’t know who I’ll support for this position … but I am unimpressed by knee-jerk ignorant ranting about [insert generic politicians] being blamed for [insert generic complaint].

Enough with the dynasties! For crying out loud, this has gone on far, far too long in West Seattle. Dow Constantine begat Joe McDermott and Sharon Nelson. Sharon begat Joe Fitzgibbon. Joe McDermott begat this latest iteration.

As others have noted, if you like the way things have been going in West Seattle, by all means, continue to vote only for people who will do what Emperor Constantine approves of. Dow wants to make certain that annexation of White Center happens, and that means meddling in Seattle’s City Council races so he has hand-picked, well-controlled people who will do his bidding. Joe McDermott is just his weak-minded puppet, so this is a mere pass through.

Another concern for people should be the consultant behind Shannon Braddock. You will find those reins controlled by Christian Sinderman, who – wait for it – also works for Emperor Constantine and Mayor Murray.

Wait until the real voice for West Seattle gets in the race.

Shannon is a fantastic addition this race. Very excited to see a mom, long time resident who is experienced with balancing multiple stakeholders to deliver real solutions to critical issues such as transit needs. The problems with transit stem mostly from a bad economy and anti-tax initiatives promoted by Tim Eyman, not the current King County Council or Executive. It will be great to have a Councilmember who can advocate for Seattle’s needs with a working knowledge of Metro’s decision-making and policies.

I am excited about Shannon as a candidate! I find her to be smart, thoughtful and hard working. She problem solves in ways that empower and elevate community voices. And she can prioritize and make deliberate choices which is something I think politicians in our area struggle with. I can’t wait to hear more! And these new district races are going to be so interesting.

FeistyBrian — Great comments. As a life-long WS resident, I’ve seen it all. I wish there were a true leader in WS who would step forward and run. But, a true leader would lead without being driven by ideology, politics, biases == does a person like this exist in WS? Voters need to really do their homework and not settle for the same old crappy non-leader politician. WS, as a community, deserves a clear, leading voice that will not cave in to politics as usual.

@wscommuter; calling another community member’s comment “knee-jerk ignorant ranting” is rude/mean; please be civil

  • Junction4Life February 11, 2015 (12:57 pm)

Things are pretty damn good here in WS, so not sure what all this whining and ranting is for. And if its good bc of dow begating joe and sharon begeting joe and joe begating this one, then I am all for more of it. What are people complaining about???

Where’s our modern day Charlie Chong?!

Not all sections of West Seattle feel equally represented. As a Highland Park resident, we often talk about being the first considered for anything negative and the last for anything positive. When I have called McDermott office about problems with the 131 they have not been very receptive. We were past a safe capacity and people would scream while going down Highland pkway because the weight of the person next to you made you feel like you were going to be knocked down.

I wish someone would run against McDermott because he doesn’t represent us in the HP.

The traffic is terrible some days just getting out of West Seattle. The construction of all these apartments make it a chore just to get into Jefferson square. Plus the crime is getting so bad in west seattle i now sleep next to my protection. We need new politicians not the same old people who have destroyed this place.

  • madashell February 13, 2015 (7:33 pm)

I first met Shannon as she shilled for Steven Sundquist at one of his “community” meetings where he ignored his community. He was shortly thereafter thrown out of office. She is part of the power clique in WS and does not merit the vote of your neighbors.

  • WenG February 14, 2015 (9:46 pm)

madashell, thank you. Connecting Shannon Braddock with Steve Sundquist tells me a lot. (See Sundquist, throwing W Seattle schools under the bus while a school board direction.)

madashell, ditto the thanks for letting people know. REALLY important to me.

Sorry, comment time is over.
