Fauntleroy Community Association: Transportation tour; surplus-substation status; Cove Park restoration; more

Two months after the Fauntleroy Community Association‘s transportation summit, a promise made during the summit is about to be fulfilled: A walking tour of Fauntleroy’s traffic/safety hotspots.

That’s just part of what FCA’s board talked about at its first 2015 meeting last night.

****Board members and other neighbors will meet with Councilmember Tom Rasmussen, SDOT’s Bill LaBorde, and Mayor Murray’s transportation adviser Andrew Glass Hastings on January 23rd. The walking tour will include the triangle intersection by Endolyne Joe’s (WSB sponsor), the precariously placed intersection of Marine View Drive and SW Roxbury, and the use of (largely residential) 45th SW as an alternate route for people trying to get around ferry lines. FCA’s Marty Westerman noted that the visiting VIP’s will likely get a good look at the Friday-afternoon ferry backups.

****Another meeting with a city rep that’s in the works: FCA president Mike Dey is meeting with Lynn Best of Seattle City Light about the former substation site in Endolyne, one of the surplus properties SCL is deciding how to handle. Dey described the meeting as intended as a “meet and greet” to get information about the property’s status and that of the public process around its potential sale, including a timeline. He’ll report back to the board.

****Also utility-related: With the Barton Pump Station upgrade project close to completion north of the ferry dock, the restoration of waterfront Cove Park approaches.

It’s been closed for two and a half years because of the project. FCA’s Mardi Clements reported back on meetings she’s had with key parties, and the association’s responsibilities once the beach parklet is restored. It’s still on track to reopen late spring/early summer, she said.

****The steps up to the old main entrance of Fauntleroy Schoolhouse, where FCA meets and where an increasing number of community organizations and businesses are based, are without a handrail. FCA’s Kathleen Dellplain is talking with an architect, looking into what it would take to change that – costs, permits required, etc.

****Last but not least, FCA plans another community survey sometime in the next few months. The last one was the inspiration for action such as the public-safety and transportation summits, and FCA hopes to find out where community members’ interests lie now.

The FCA board meets second Tuesdays, 7 pm, at the schoolhouse board room, 9131 California SW, all welcome. Find FCA online at fauntleroy.net and via its Facebook page.

I cant wait to see this finished, even though part of me still worries about its effects and how careful the construction has been on our not so solid foundation of earth in these parts.

I wish they could get off this sell, sell, mindset and turn all those properties into grass covered kid play spaces.

Sorry, comment time is over.
