West Seattle coyotes: 2 together, seen in Sunrise Heights

Today’s impromptu wildlife theme continues, this time away from the shore – We’ve received three reports of coyote sightings in Sunrise Heights around mid-afternoon. Jeremy shared the photos (taken from a distance – we cropped them), after seeing two “wandering down 27th near Othello” in the 2 pm hour.

Not long after that, Ellery saw two coyotes that “just strolled by in front of my house on 32nd Ave at Holden St.” That’s also where Sarah reported seeing them. (Here’s a map showing both aforementioned locations.)

If you haven’t seen coyote mentions here before … we’ve been publishing reader reports of sightings for more than seven years; here’s the archive. The more awareness, and the more that we all follow advice such as not leaving food out, the more likelihood of continuing to minimize closeup conflict. (The state Fish and Wildlife “Living with Wildlife” page that we usually recommend seems to be inaccessible right now, so here’s another page full of info/advice.)

http://wdfw.wa.gov/living/ is this the link you had that didn’t work before? If so, it works now.

Thanks! Checked over a span of 15 minutes, maybe the state was just having a hiccup. Specifically, the coyote edition, which we’ve probably linked to a hundred times: http://wdfw.wa.gov/living/coyotes.html

Saw them during my walk at the Park …they were running towards me.

Please keep your cats inside. Many “lost” cats have become dinner for coyotes.

Both coyotes in photos look ill, appear to be suffering from mange which, unfortunately is very contagious among wild life groups. I see a coyote with mange in one out of three sightings in my neighborhood. A healthy coyote has a beautiful coat and a bushy tail.

Dose Seattle? Have plans to catch them.

No; they’re just part of the urban-wildlife scene, like squirrels, rats, birds, etc. Their diet consists far more of rodents and, among other effects, it’s considered that we would be far more overrun with rodents if they suddenly disappeared. Even professional wildlife trapper/killers (like Aaron, the federal agent featured here a few times https://westseattleblog.com/2013/07/federal-wildlife-agent-its-a-neighborhood-problem-not-a-coyote-problem ) point out the best thing to do is just not put food out. And “food” in this case would include, potentially, unattended small domestic animals.

I’ll have to agree with WSB. I know there are variety of opinions on coyotes, but it is near impossible to remove them at this point. Truly sorry for those who have lost, and will lose, beloved pets, though.

I saw one in Beach drive a few years back and another one running through someone’s yard last week near Morgan and 37th or so.

Spotted a small coyote that looked much like these — quite scrawny, and no tail fur — around 37th and Brandon. It was in a grassy “no man’s land” between houses/alley and then ran down the street and into Fairmount Park.

Dec 25 at noon, saw an adult coyote and 3 babies at 13th and Holly, in tall grass about 4ft from the side of the road. Lots of people walk their pets along that side of street to Riverview park on 12th. Best be aware and keep dogs on a leash. Have seen two walking the sidewalk of the park in daylight.

Sorry, comment time is over.
