Congratulations! Big wins for West Seattle Elementary chess players

Congratulations to West Seattle Elementary Chess Club members who did very well at a regional chess tournament before the Thanksgiving break. The fifth-grade team placed third overall and two students qualified for the state tournament, Rory Moriarty Carey and Jimmy Oto. Thanks to Ritchie for sharing the news.

(P.S. – You might recall that chess at WSES made news last spring, when the school was visited by international chess star Phiona Mutesi.)

Great job students! I am so thrilled to see youth interested in a mental sport rather than a physical one. Keep up the great work, Chess will teach you so many lessons about life!

Thank you for this. It’s a bright spot when we’re in the trenches dealing with smoke and mirrors re: downtown and trying to ferret information that has to do with money and policies. Easy to forget the amazing teachers, mentors, and students who do great things everyday with limited resources and support.

    Great going young people (kids)!

I have a suggestion that we get a full listing of the names of these young people in the picture — they deserve the recognition!

Great job all! Coach Jeremy should also be recognized for his commitment to any and all West Seattle chess players, he is a great teacher and coach. If you are interested in your child playing chess or you want to help further chess in WS, visit Jeremy on Tuesday afternoons at the High Point Library for drop in chess.
