Intense night of early-season high-school basketball last night as West Seattle High School hosted Chief Sealth International High School. Above, fans rushed the court after the WSHS boys pulled out an overtime win, 56-47, in the last game of the night; the WSHS girls also went home with a win, 83-40.

First, the girls’ varsity game.

The Wildcats used a full-court press effectively early on, built a big lead, and hung onto it.

WSHS also controlled the ball under the basket, generally playing a more physical game.

The Seahawks worked to keep up:

Lexi Ioane (below left), with 20 points, and Emily Fiso (with four 3-pointers) and Lydia Giomi (below right), with 16 points each, led WSHS scoring.

Oshae Walker led Sealth scoring with 17 points. The Seahawks are led again this year by head coach Katie Jo Maris:

Now, to the boys-varsity game:

After some shooting challenges in the first quarter, the game was close, trading 1- or 2-point leads, until the third quarter.

Early in the third, WSHS built to a 9-point lead, but foul trouble allowed Sealth to get close again, and regulation ended at 47-47.

In overtime, Carter Golgart and Melvin Arrington (above left, with Sealth’s Haffid Yassan) each picked up a basket that put West Seattle out front and kept them there. Scoring leaders: Arrington and Andre Moore (1st photo below) had 15 each for WSHS, with 12 by Nate Pryor (2nd photo below).

For Sealth, Haffid Yassan scored 15 points, with Ahmed Mohamed (below) next, at 12.

Tough loss for Colin Slingsby, head coach for the Seahawk boys again this year:

Up next: No rest for the West Seattle High School boys, who play at Thomas Jefferson High School tonight; the girls’ next game is Wednesday at Lakeside. For Chief Sealth, both teams play next at Rainier Beach High School, the boys on Tuesday, the girls on Wednesday. Both schools have home games next Friday (December 19th) – CSIHS hosting Ballard; WSHS hosting Ingraham.
