TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Veterans Day 2014

(WS high/low bridges and Highway 99 views; more cams on the WSB Traffic page)
As we start the morning, here’s what might affect how you get around on this Veterans Day:

*Metro is on a reduced-weekday/no-UW schedule
*No Water Taxi service on either route
*Sound Transit: Regular schedule
*Washington State Ferries: Regular schedule
*Schools are closed today (as are other government-run facilities including libraries)
*In Seattle neighborhoods with street parking, it’s free today

WEST SEATTLE TRANSPORTATION COALITION TONIGHT: The holiday is NOT pre-empting a full slate of community meetings, including the WSTC, 6:30 pm at Neighborhood House’s High Point Center (6400 Sylvan Way SW) – see the agenda here.

7:25 AM: As noted in comments, some Battery St. Tunnel trouble, but no official word on its current status….

@6:50 Overhead reader said battery street tunnel is closed. The viaduct is already a mess. Nothing posted on wsdot’s website.

Stalled vehicle blocking 1 lane, per 2 traffic reporters, but no closure mentioned….

    Garbage?

      Yes.

FYI in case anyone besides me missed the memo, “holiday schedule” means no 56 AT ALL.

It may be a holiday for some, but same ole peak hour traffic, with a packed to the gills rapid ride C going downtown. Our city severely underestimates the commute level on this holiday.

Apparently a lot of people who take the 50 didn’t realize they were also on a reduced holiday schedule and that the bus they were waiting for was not going to come for another 20 minutes. Used to be that the bus drivers would make an announcement letting their regular riders know of a change like that.

I cannot believe how frustrating it is to have something like the Battery Street Tunnel closed during a morning commute and then not be able to find ANYTHING about it on the news/traffic websites! My only warning was one sign that said “Battery Tunnel Closed” at 6:45…not on the bridge, mind you, but on 99N. At least it gave me the option to exit at Seneca but MANY commuters did not see that sign by the way they kept barreling towards the tunnel.

All was clear at 8:15 in the tunnel, just some minor backup on 99 approaching downtown. Faster than normal.

Sorry, comment time is over.
