Reader report: Words of gratitude for a West Seattle neighbor

A message like this might usually end up in the WSB Forums‘ Rant/Rave section, but it arrived in our inbox, and a Monday morning seemed like the time for some good news. From Kelly:

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to the woman who is currently raking leaves off the sidewalk (which is also the primary bike route in/out of our neighborhood) and the Delridge onramp to the bridge. That street flooded horribly earlier this week because of leaves in the storm grate and was dangerous. The water was almost over the sidewalk. My husband and I were driving by so I couldn’t thank her myself but I hope you’ll share my deep appreciation!

yes, thank you! Those leaves and tree debris build up and create a hazard for cyclists. Especially on the curve riding by traffic headed like bats out of hell for the bridge. A fall there could be tragic and is preventable (SDOT…)! Volunteer help is excellent!

Wonderful. We need more volunteer action like this. Great job!

The city has an “Adopt a Drain” program where an individual can promise to keep a particular drain clear of leaves. You even get to name your adopted drain!

Yay! Good job good community member! I think I’ll go rake out the leaves by my curb now to free up my drain. You’ve inspired me!

I want to say thank you for the shout out. I try my best to keep on top of it but sometimes the leaves come down faster than I can rake them up! :-)

After riding my bicycle along that route last Fall to and from work I also noted the danger of the slick leaves along the pedestrian and bike path which borders the on ramp to the bridge. Took it upon myself to contact an individual with NDCC
and within a week a handful of us raked and also bagged a lot of the slick fallen leaves ,bags provided thru adopt a drain. Made a huge difference. Now that I am not cycling to work like before I have forgotten about it until now. What to do?
