Port-backup update: More ships arrive & are at anchor tonight

Following up on the West Coast port backup noted here on Monday (the union and terminal operators, still in contract talks, disagree on its cause): The number of cargo ships at anchor in this area has increased tonight. One of the ships that had been off Manchester for a few days, the Hyundai Force, moved on to Tacoma (as shown in Cheryl’s photo above) this afternoon. Two more arrived in that area, so tonight, MarineTraffic.com shows three ships off Manchester, two in Elliott Bay off northeast West Seattle/Harbor Island (the OOCL London, shown here Monday, and the YM March), and two off Magnolia.

(Added: Photo taken tonight by Don Brubeck)
Seattle’s terminals were closed today for the Veterans Day holiday.

I’m curious as to how much pollution/waste these ships generate as they sit idle?

This morning, I can see four full container ships anchored off Manchester. I’m on Beach Drive, directly across from Blake Island.

The ship’s use a higher grade fuel when they are in US waters, are usually only running a generator while at anchor, and ALL other waste (sewage, ballast, etc.) is kept aboard until we are many miles off shore in the ocean. Garbage goes ashore.

How can you NOT respect the greatness of these ships? Me personally, I love seeing them!

Indeed, the vessels are magnificent in their design and size. However, I find the constant drone of their generators 24 hours a day annoying. Also, their lights illuminate the entire east side of my home at night. Quite annoying. While on occasion they are enjoyment to see, I would not want a steady diet of these boats blocking an even more magnificent view.

I like these big ships . I wish they could do business in Grays Harbor. And it might boost the economy.

Sorry, comment time is over.
