West Seattle weather: Thousands lose power in Saturday night windstorm

(NO POWER? BE SURE CITY LIGHT KNOWS: 206-684-7400, OUTAGE HOTLINE)

(One of several photos @Naurthon tweeted showing tree blocking part of Delridge near Home Depot)
7:55 PM: Minutes before the National Weather Service‘s “high wind warning” for our area was originally to officially take effect, the wind is already gusting big time, at least where we are, and lights have flickered numerous times. We’re already seeing the first West Seattle power outage – about 120 people along Beach Drive. We’ll be covering this throughout the night – please let us know of any problems where you are – editor@westseattleblog.com, text or voice at 206-293-6302.

8:10 PM: Tree reported to have fallen on a house in the 5600 block of SW Admiral Way – no one hurt. We’re en route. (Update: Couldn’t find it.) Also, a power outage is reported in Gatewood, but not on the map yet – the map grab above still just shows the one on Beach Drive, which is blamed on a tree (not sure where that one is).

8:30 PM: Thanks to everyone who’s commented/messaged with information on other spot outages – from Bonair to Puget Ridge to Highland Park. Remember that if you have to be out driving and happen onto a non-working signal – that’s a 4-way stop intersection. (added) Annie sends this photo of a tree down on 24th between Barton and Cambridge:

8:44 PM: Just heard a scanner report of a tree down on Delridge at 21st SW, blocking southbound lanes. And we have this photo via Twitter:

Jeff tweets that a tree is down on Roxbury at 34th. Thanks again to everyone sharing info and photos.

9 PM: 55 outages are now reported around the city, affecting more than 22,000 homes and businesses. Several are now mapped in West Seattle – see here for the latest. If you lose/find a pet during the storm – or any other time – remember that for six years, WSB has had the only West Seattle-specific lost/found pets page – westseattleblog.com/pets; just added a dog found tonight. Meantime, in comments, flynlo has noted 48 mph gusts on Gatewood Hill.

(Added: SFD at wires-down site on SW Ida – WSB photo by Christopher Boffoli)
9:20 PM: Now, add outages in Arbor Heights – we saw the 35th/Roxbury signal go out as that happened – and Morgan Junction; Arroyos, too, per comments. The tree down on Roxbury, meantime, is at 32nd – we’ll have a photo shortly (update: tree photo courtesy Dustin Smith).

If you have to go out, slow down – our photographer said people were coming up on the tree way too fast for safety. Meantime, every gust seems to take more people out – some now out in Fauntleroy. Also, trees down in two spots in Highland Park, Andrea e-mails: “One heading down Highland Park (Way) just after Holden and the other on 9th right side northbound.”

9:45 PM: Power outage finally hit us in Upper Fauntleroy. We’re continuing to report with backup power and Internet. Wind still strong. Re: Roxbury tree, Joe Szilagyi shows us via Instagram that the Roxbury tree is being towed. Meantime, you’re probably wondering how long the power will be out. Even the “guesstimates” you might see on the City Light map are not reliable (and SCL acknowledges that). 52,000 homes and businesses are now out citywide, according to the map. *Or it could be sooner rather than later – commenter Petertut says power’s BACK in the 5900 block of Beach Drive.

10:21 PM: Minutes after @naurthon tweeted that photo, he reported that the tree is clear and Delridge is open again in the SW Orchard vicinity. The weather *sounds* as if it’s calming a bit – we’re looking around to see if forecasters have any insight. This was only supposed to last until the early-morning hours, and we’re still counting on “all systems go” for the Harvest Festival in The Junction 10-2 tomorrow.

10:48 PM: Chet says a tree and wires are down on Fauntleroy Way north of Lincoln Park. Also a new report from Sharryn of a tree down by 35th/Roxbury. And Shane sent photos of two trees down along the street in the 2100 block of California SW.

We’re also adding the newest screengrab from the City Light map, showing the many outages on the peninsula – looks like more than 10,000 homes/businesses. Far more of the former than the latter – it appears The Junction has kept power, for example (“live” traffic cam image added, to prove it):

So if you need food/beverages, there’s one direction to head in.

(Added: Fauntleroy ferry dock – WSB photo by Christopher Boffoli)
11:15 PM: WSB’s Christopher Boffoli has been roving to see what’s happening where. He reports, “Pitch black from Morgan Junction all the way down past Lincoln Park. Ferry dock is still without power and is waiting for generators to arrive. They somehow still have one terminal open and they’re able to check people in (right side ticket booth). Ferry traffic is very light.” SCL has done some restoring – the total citywide is now down to 50,000. Meantime, trees aren’t just out in roads – Dianne in Admiral e-mailed, “My neighbor’s tree fell in 3 or 4 spots, and they are on top of my house, and hanging next to it. My Willow tree is badly damaged and I think my Maple is down. I’ll know more tomorrow morning. Very frightening.” Then a bit later:

Likely going to be much to clean up – branches and leaves in the streets and on the sidewalks … in the morning.

1:26 AM: City Light is making progress – the outage map now shows 38,000 customers (homes/businesses) without power around its coverage area, down from a peak past 52,000. We’re still out in Upper Fauntleroy after almost four hours.

Adding several photos from Christopher Boffoli’s travels checking out storm damage, including the one above, a fence knocked down on 37th SW.

5:10 AM UPDATE: Many are back on. Not us, yet.

7:07 AM: Same as above. We will launch a new story shortly. Meantime, the Harvest Festival is ON – The Junction didn’t even lose power last night.

7:32 AM: That new story is here.

  • Chicaboo October 25, 2014 (8:03 pm)

Power went out completely for about 3 seconds on delridge by willow. Don’t really know how many were effected beyond the houses I could see but the street lights remained off for a time

Lights are flicking big-time up here near Jefferson Square for about the past 15 minutes. Two nights ago we actually lost power for about 15 seconds. Hoping the power stays on.

  • Jen October 25, 2014 (8:16 pm)

There is a downed utility wire of some sort bisecting 62nd street between Hinds and Admiral. It is at windshield height. We almost drove into it, but stopped just in time. We have been trying to call Seattle City Light but haven’t gotten through.

  • GoHokies October 25, 2014 (8:17 pm)

Alki resident over on Mercer Isl now.. Can’t see any houses with power within a several block radius.. pretty blue and orange light shows as well.. lightning, transformers, or the next alien invasion.?.?

    • WSB October 25, 2014 (8:19 pm)

GoHokies – the scanner says tons of transformers blowing along 520. Wind gust up to 50 reported over there so far. So I’d imagine Mercer is in the same predicament.
      .
Jen – someone asked us about something similar – if it is a safety hazard I highly suggest calling 911. Don’t want to run the risk it’s a live wire, or snags a vehicle and pulls down a pole, or …

  • Mike October 25, 2014 (8:20 pm)

Heard some large branches and/or trees falling in Schmitz Park.

  • Paula Tortorice October 25, 2014 (8:21 pm)

  • 1000amys October 25, 2014 (8:22 pm)

Power is out in Puget Ridge at 21st & Holly

    • WSB October 25, 2014 (8:23 pm)

Thanks. Gatewood and Puget Ridge outages aren’t on the SCL map yet. There’s been quite some lag in recent accuracy there.

  • Gabby October 25, 2014 (8:23 pm)

@jen, maybe call 911? I check the Seattle Fire 911 log online and they send fire trucks out for “wires down” calls.

Mike – thanks, we’ll add the numbers to the top of this story. And anyone with an outage, don’t assume City Light already knows – sometimes they don’t -TR

I feel bad for the folks down Admiral who had a tree fall on their house…hope not a lot of damage. Candles lit, flashlight near..Kindle Fire charged :D

  • Mark Stoelinga October 25, 2014 (8:44 pm)

Tree down on hill of Highland PK Wy blocking traffic heading down hill.

    • WSB October 25, 2014 (9:04 pm)

Thanks, Steph. ** Emily – co-publisher Patrick Sand tried all sorts of ways to look for that reported tree. Finally had to give up. No way to find out – SPD and SFD now completely slammed running around to problems out there. If anyone reading this knows, let us know! So far no injuries reported from all these falling trees, hope it stays that way …

  • cjboffoli October 25, 2014 (9:00 pm)

I’m listening to Sea-Tac approach radios and I’ve heard at least a few incoming airliners that have had to abort their landings and go around because of wind shear. It cannot be fun to be airborne in this mess right now.

  • emily October 25, 2014 (9:02 pm)

SFD didn’t seem to be able to find the tree on the house on admiral either. The address in the 911 log doesn’t exist (if it did it would be in my side yard). Curious about what spurred the call though.

  • Jpburns October 25, 2014 (9:03 pm)

Power out at Delrigde and Juneau

  • alki resident October 25, 2014 (9:05 pm)

Is it that important we get power back on tonite?Seems dangerous and risky from the crew to perform during such a windy night.

  • Matchbeezie October 25, 2014 (9:09 pm)

Been dark up on Puget Ridge for awhile now. And yeah, just when the Huskies had regained my attention! They have the run game, and I have the faith. Would trade some of that in for a little power, tho.

  • Paul October 25, 2014 (9:44 pm)

This is a good reminder to always be prepared for emergencies. Candles, flashlights, batteries, extra food & water (and pet food) – very important during times like these! Lots of good info on King County’s website.

  • GunnerDDog October 25, 2014 (9:44 pm)

Gatewood just east of California near Gatewood Elementary. Power flickered on and off rapidly for about a minute. It’s on now, but I’m assuming it’s not for long unless the wind dies down.

  • Ali cat October 25, 2014 (9:45 pm)

Lights went out for a few seconds after a big flash, then came back on. Gatewood.

  • Dustin October 25, 2014 (9:46 pm)

Picture of the tree down at Roxbury just east of 34th. It’s blocking both east bound lanes as well as the west bound lanes except for 1/2 of the northern most one (juuuuust enough for cars to sneak around). Someone (not a police officer) was waving east bound traffic coming from 35th onto 34th as a detour. This was all happening about 15 min. ago.

We are on Fauntleroy driving south and west from Morgan Junction – as soon as you get west of the Junction (past Zeeks) it is pitch dark all the way down to and past Lincoln Park. We live in Arbor Heights, and the hill looks dark too.

  • ~HockeyWitch~ October 25, 2014 (9:52 pm)

Correction… power flickered, went out, flicked back on… went out for about 3 mins and came back on… Hold on to your hats.. gonna be a wild night.

  • David October 25, 2014 (9:52 pm)

Power out in Arbor Heights, 108th and 37th. Also, it’s been an hour, but there was an entire tree down and crossing both lanes on marine view drive sw near California ave sw

  • Petertut October 25, 2014 (9:52 pm)

Lights back on in the 5900 block of beach drive. City light crews were working an unknown problem in the street.

Thank you for all the reporting. Came home to Arbor Heights from Ballard to no power and knew I could find info on the blog.

  • hopey October 25, 2014 (10:40 pm)

We’ve had a lot of gusts but thankfully only power flickers south of the Junction.

  • Trick October 25, 2014 (10:44 pm)

Looking across the street in AH and neighbors have power. My candles and wine will suffice.

    • WSB October 25, 2014 (10:53 pm)

Trick – that reminds us of a safety nudge from City Light, be sure the candles are all out before you go to sleep. Sounds like “no duh” but more than a few house fires are candle-related. (Happened at my house when I was a kid, another time/another place, but awful.)

  • Kami October 25, 2014 (10:53 pm)

Tree down on 110th and marine view. Three wires hanging. Fire department came and taped off section.

  • Kelli October 25, 2014 (10:55 pm)

We are like the only house on our block that has power in Arbor Heights.

    Fauntlee hills has power

  • Franci October 25, 2014 (11:07 pm)

    • WSB October 25, 2014 (11:12 pm)

Overall, from the City Light map, south of The Junction seems the hardest hit.

  • Sukie October 25, 2014 (11:15 pm)

Power just went out in Gatewood (Austin near 35th).

    • WSB October 25, 2014 (11:19 pm)

Oh no! Unless it’s part of the staging to fix some others – maybe it’ll be shortlived.

  • bsmomma October 25, 2014 (11:36 pm)

Just got home in North Admiral from Downtown.Downtown was crazy! We have power but we may need a new fence! Planks are on the ground and the rest is leaning. Ugh.

  • Dereck October 25, 2014 (11:51 pm)

No power yet for my building next to pelly place.

  • Jill October 25, 2014 (11:59 pm)

Power is out 35th and Webster. City Light is notified.

  • RickB October 26, 2014 (12:03 am)

No power at 26th Ave SW and 100th in WC. The SCL map shows us as a somewhat amusing “finger” of outage in an otherwise okay area… Luckily don’t really need power until the Hawks game at 10:00 tomorrow.

  • flimflam October 26, 2014 (12:04 am)

power on. power off. I have power, neighbor no have power. oh, wait, my lights just flickered.

Anyone parked on 5900 block of Cali S move your car. Trees are falling. Called in hours ago, and a second time a few minutes ago, but no response. Trees are not in the road, but one is hovering inches above a white mini van and has torn up the sidewalk. Second is leaning more toward up rooting by the second. I do not think they will damage any apartments, but cars are at risk.

  • Dereck October 26, 2014 (12:44 am)

Just called seattle lights to find out when the lights might come back on. The automated system said im not in a outage area. I had to report it. Hope the lights go on before I wake up in morning. Ugg

  • sunnpuppy October 26, 2014 (12:50 am)

Still no power on Lowman Beach and 48th , but per the usual, Beach Drive, ( on the other side of the street from us) is lit up like it’s Xmas.

  • Eromariner October 26, 2014 (1:08 am)

So… Just called to check on status of power outage up here in Arbor Heights, asked for my info and said I was not part of an outage (WT.) . Did no one else report it? I just got home from work. I’ve heard from neighbors that the power has been out for a few hours.

  • Roxanne October 26, 2014 (1:08 am)

Our large pine split in 3 parts, one on house, 2 in street taking out transformer. This in the 3700 block of Ida street . Hazmat team on the way.

  • tom October 26, 2014 (1:44 am)

I also was told I was not part of power outage. Previously was told 3:30 am. Not sure why . Anyway I reported I was without power since 9:30

    • WSB October 26, 2014 (1:49 am)

City Light still doesn’t have an automatic way to know who’s with and without power – that theoretically would come with the controversial “smart meters” that are still making their way through the approval process last I heard. I should probably call just to see what they are saying about our area; again, the guesstimate “restoration” times are not scientifically based, some sort of SCL calculation and might be quite far off. Thanks for updates – we’re continuing to monitor and will be interested in hearing when power comes back on and where – TR

    • WSB October 26, 2014 (1:52 am)

Interesting, I just called … and the system also told me I wasn’t part of an outage. The one here involves thousands of customers and IS on the map, though. Must be a glitch.

  • Eromariner October 26, 2014 (2:09 am)

Oh well,, at least it’s not a really cold night and hopefully everyone has a couple extra blankets for the night. .

  • aa October 26, 2014 (2:26 am)

104th and 42nd in arbor heights. Just saw a City Light truck go down the block shining a bright light up along all the wires. Maybe trying to trace the outage or look for downed branches/trees? Good to see them up here at any rate.

  • Me October 26, 2014 (2:38 am)

Don’t forget to check your food when the power goes out. When in doubt throw it out.

Power back on Lincoln Park Way 3:00 AM. It went off about 9:30 PM.

Comcast internet has been for snitz since Wednesday. Haven’t bothered to call them since I know they won’t fix the problem and don’t care. Been going through this for 6 years and they always tell me to reset the modem. SIX YEARS.

Comcast, it’s not the modem, it’s your lines.

  • kevin October 26, 2014 (4:26 am)

  • Sukie October 26, 2014 (5:40 am)

Power still out on Austin near 35th (Gatewood). Last year when we lost power it was off for 36 hours so hopefully it won’t be that long this time around. Latest estimate is 8 am from City Lights (fingers crossed).

  • the hepcat October 26, 2014 (9:13 am)

Still out at California and rose in gatewood.

  • Marcy October 26, 2014 (12:50 pm)

The tree down on Roxbury is from my yard. Thanks to my generous neighbors, it was hauled back into my front yard and the street was even swept clear of small branches and pine cones. I am amazed, humbled, and incredibly thankful for such a warm response.

  • Alkidoc October 26, 2014 (2:55 pm)

Power still out in Fairmount ravine. Trees were down on top and bottom of hill trapping all our cars at home – now partially cleared except a large mess of a big tree hanging all over a power line and wires all over street just up from harbor. Do not drive through Fairmount! And if you live here you will have to approach from uphill and hike in perhaps…

  • zephyr October 26, 2014 (7:11 pm)

We are on California, near Orchard and were one of the very first to lose power. Two apt buildings near us lost power as well. We called in immediately. Initially we were told that power would be restored by 2 am. Another call in the morning seemed to indicate that we had not called in. !? Several more calls were made by neighbors, etc. It’s almost been 24 hours and the automated system says that there is no estimated repair time. Is anyone else still without power ? Are there still repair crews working in West Seattle tonight?

Sorry, comment time is over.
