Update: Pickup goes sideways on westbound bridge by Walking on Logs

12:50 PM: The westbound lanes of the Fauntleroy end of the bridge are blocked by the crash in the photo (thanks to Phillip for sending it) – a vehicle pickup truck gone sideways. More to come.

1:03 PM: We’re looking at the scene from the pedestrian overpass nearby. Westbound blocked, one lane open eastbound. Ambulance at the scene; Seattle Fire has cleared.

1:23 PM: Traffic is being routed around the scene on the right, as shown on the nearby SDOT camera. A commenter says the people in the pickup were OK; we’re checking with SFD regarding whether anyone was taken to the hospital.

1:33 PM: Pickup’s being towed. (And a few minutes later, via scanner: “Bridge open both ways.”)

5:39 PM: According to Seattle Fire spokesperson Kyle Moore, both people in the pickup – both in their 20s – were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.

Both occupants of truck were okay.

Thanks, JWright – we’re seeing AMR there so somebody might be transported to be checked more closely.

Thanks for the info. I looked out my window and was wondering what was going on. I can see cars getting off at Harbor Ave without too much of a backup there at the moment.

    What’s the speed limit there?

Just heard from someone coming to pick me up for school that traffic is finally moving.

It looks from the traffic cam (screengrab added, and a link to the “live” cam) like vehicles are being routed through the Walking on Logs pullout.

Both occupants were out of the truck very quickly under their own power. In the first picture, they are both over on the left, standing with the firefighters. The occupants said they were okay but the firefighters gave the “your vehicle just flipped you might want to get checked out by a medical professional” lecture so they must have heeded that.

SFD’s PIO just provided the info … both people wound up going to hospitals to be checked out, but with minor injuries. Adding to the story for posterity. Thank you!

I wonder if the driver was distracted. Was this a single car accident? Its not all that easy to flip a car, maybe they were cut off abrubtly, had to swerve hard? Just Wondering, no clue what happened.

I drive a pickup truck and in the wet last week I did a mini fishtail in this same section of the Bridge. I think when it rains oily runoff from trucks and buses creates a slick surface in that uphill corner. Too much speed in a vehicle with a light weight rear end, like my pickup, can result in an unexpected loss of midcorner traction,an uncontrolled slide into the curbing and then a possible flip. Slow it down people.

The driver was in fact male.

Thanks and sorry, this is exactly what we got from SFD. Genders not particularly important in the storytelling anyway so I’ll just remove.

Sorry, comment time is over.
