West Seattle weekend scene: Tiki Tank on Alki

From the Playa to the beach. Previously seen at Burning Man (here’s video!), the Tiki Tank turned up on Alki tonight. David Hutchinson photographed it outside Spud, not far from the salsa’ing crowd at Statue of Liberty Plaza, in what mashed up into a fine late-summer Saturday night at the beach.

Please define “mashed up” for us old timers.

Hi, GOP, I’m kinda oldtimey myself (double nickels in a few weeks) but anyway, I was riffing off the term “mashup” – “a mixture or fusion of disparate elements,” with Google providing the example, “the movie becomes a weird mash-up of 1950s western and 1970s TV cop show.” – Tracy

TikiTank! Were you at the Burn this year as well? My husband swore he saw you at the Temple Burn.

I saw them on the playa this year too, I think.

I didn’t think they had gas guzzlers at Burning Man? I thought all vehicles/ sculptures inside the ‘playa’ were people powered? i mean you would need to get a vehicle to get out there, but once there, all the fancy stuff was human powered?

Sam-c, it’s been 13 years since I attended Burning Man, but back then at least fueled vehicles were allowed as long as they kept to the 5mph speed limit. (That said, powering something with human muscle is one of those interesting challenges that a lot of Burners love to take on, and driving non-art cars is generally discouraged.)

I have to say that one of the more amusing experiences I had at Burning Man was going for a walk late at night well away from the city, and a flatbed truck drove by with the Star Wars cantina band on the back, playing their signature tune.

heres whats happening right now reference to REAL tiki . http://www.3sat.de/mediathek/?mode=play&obj=45738
The exhibit is in Paris but anyone can get the Taschen book. and then figure out which page has an internationally famous tiki artist that lives right here in West Seattle. True none of this has anything to do with Burning Man but it has everything to do with what should and shouldn’t be classified as tiki. Creativity = YAY, accuracy even better!

I love Burning Man and I love Tiki. This “tank” is amazing but why is it called a Tiki tank? I don’t see any tikis. Where are they?

We had the privilege to be given a deep playa nite ride on the TikiTank by Jack and her friends while at Caravansary this summer, maybe two weeks ago tomorrow to the day. The generosity and friendliness and hospitality of the crew lingers just as much as the visuals of the playa art all decked out at nite. One of the highlights of our Burn!
