Fun on foot and/or on wheels at Seattle Summer Streets on Alki, 1st report

You’ll have a whale of a time at Seattle Summer Streets this afternoon on Alki Avenue SW – check out the street art by Seal Sitters‘ booth, with a gray whale (and, out of the frame, seal mom and pup) already chalked within moments of the festival’s start, and more to come, including an orca. If you have kids, stop by the booth for a coloring sheet to take home. You can have fun just walking, or bring your bike:

That’s Stu Hennessey, who you’ll find with DIY Bikes. The police are on two wheels, too:

Be at 63rd and Alki at 1 pm for the bike parade – and enjoy activities along the rest of the stretch – updates to come!

ADDED SUNDAY NIGHT: Thanks to those who shared photos with us – first, from Don Brubeck of West Seattle Bike Connections, the bicycle rodeo:

See more photos in the report on WSBC’s website. And thanks to Paul Twibell for the photo of Bubbleman:

You’ll also see him at the Morgan Junction Community Festival, coming up in about a month (Saturday, June 21st). P.S. Paul shot many more photos at Summer Streets; his Flickr gallery is here.

Is there any way to notify the police stationed at both California Way and at Don Armini that Alki was supposed to re-open @ 11am? If I read the flyer correctly, Alki from 56th -63rd is closed until 5pm, the rest opened after the 5k….traffic on Harbor is a mess!

Isn’t Alki supposed to be open after the 5K from California Way to 56th? SPD still has the street closed (1:15pm).

And to think… the people that live down here were told 11 it’s now what time? Who is paying the police to sit and do traffic control when a street is supposed to be OPEN?? HOURS AGO!!!

Hmmm… the flyer that SDOT left on all of our doors THIS year specifically states, “Parking will be restricted along the water side of Alki SW (west of Duwamish Head) to 56th Ave SW from 8 AM – 11 AM” The street legend on the map shows in solid pink street closed form 9 AM to 11 AM…

Now I understand why there was a backup from the Sarbucks on Admiral Way all the way to about 60th Ave SW on Admiral Way. We noticed a huge line or cars when we came back from Costco, drove along it until it ended just to see how long it would be. It was just after the rain came in. People were starting to turn around mid traffic to go another route it was so long. I guess people don’t realize we live on a grid system and you can take side streets that run parallel.

Sorry, comment time is over.
