First SW Charlestown, next SW Genesee closing for road work

April 10, 2014 at 2:29 pm | In West Seattle news, West Seattle traffic alerts | 9 Comments

Just in from SDOT – another steep stretch of street in West Seattle is about to get some work:

Next week, SW Genesee Street will be closed between SW Avalon Way and 30th Avenue SW from 9 a.m. Monday, April 14 through 6 p.m. Friday, April 18. During the closure of the steep West Seattle hill, the Seattle Department of Transportation will repair several worn concrete panels.

Local access will be allowed, however, all other traffic will be detoured to the nearest arterials. Eastbound motorists on SW Genesee Street will be detoured northbound on SW Avalon Way to lower S Spokane Street, east on Spokane to Delridge Way SW and then southbound on Delridge to SW Genesee Street. Westbound traffic on SW Genesee Street will follow the detour in reverse – drivers will head northbound on Delridge Way SW, west on lower S Spokane Street, and south on SW Avalon Way to Genesee. The work is weather-dependent.

3:06 PM SIDE NOTE: A comment reminds us, both this project and the Charlestown work were on a list of SDOT’s 2014 plans for West Seattle, published here after we requested the information in January. If you missed it then (or forgot), see it here.

3:30 PM: Thanks to Mike for sharing the Metro Route 50 reroute notice for this work – see it here.

  1. Keep it comin’, SDOT! We have LOTS of roads that need attention.

  2. Az – your comment reminds me, we actually had word of this a couple months ago (though, not the scheduling) when I asked for and received the SDOT list of planned work for the year. It mentioned Charlestown too. Will add to the story:

  3. Here’s the related e-mail announcement from Metro on the reroute of Route 50:

Beginning Monday, April 14 at 9:00 AM through Saturday, April 19 at the end of service, Route 50 will be rerouted in both directions off of Delridge Way SW and SW Genesee St in West Seattle, due to construction.

During this time, route 50 heading toward West Seattle will travel instead via SW Spokane St and SW Avalon Way, and then on to its regular route.

Heading toward Othello Station, route 50 will instead travel via SW Avalon Way and SW Spokane St, and then on to its regular route.

Route 50 will serve all posted stops while on its revised routing.

Visit the Metro Online Service Advisories page for complete information. Note that start and end times may be subject to change.

Thank you for riding and for using Metro’s services.

  4. Thanks, Mike. Sorry, I lazily failed to just simply look at the online schedule and see about a reroute notice …

  6. WSB, I highly doubt any of your readers would associate the words “lazily” or “failed” with you! Thanks for your services to the community!

  7. The cement work on Charlestown street project looks good. Will they be repainting the crosswalk at the top of the hill on 46th?

  9. As far as the top of the hill on Charlestown, I wish there was a way to prohibit the illegal turns people make. The signs are ignored and there have been so many close calls despite myself and others driving defensively. The steep grade makes visibility impossible in certain scenarios but people still make bad, illegal, choices so often.
