Update: Suspect in custody after helicopter/ground search finds stolen vehicle

(TOPLINE: Suspect in custody, 2 1/2 hours after crashing stolen vehicle and breaking into his former home)

(Thanks to commenter Koleah for the photo)
9:11 PM: Just in case you’re wondering … we’re hearing it right over us but not sure yet what it’s up to.

9:21 PM UPDATE: Sounds like the search involves a suspected stolen car.

9:27 PM UPDATE: As noted by commenters, this is centered southwest of The Junction. From scanner, sounds like the vehicle’s been found.

9:34 PM UPDATE: Also sounds as if they believe they know where the suspect is. A K-9 team is joining the search.

9:51 PM UPDATE: No word of arrests yet. But the helicopter is moving on.

10:01 PM UPDATE: This isn’t resolved yet but might go on a while. We have a crew back in the area to see if they can find out anything more.

10:19 PM UPDATE: We talked to police in the area. Despite some neighbors believing they heard a shot, police said there have been no shots fired – the sound was likely the crash through a fence from the start of all this, which is centered in the 4800 block of 47th SW. Here’s how Guardian One describes it via Twitter:

In response to a question, the Guardian One tweeter followed up with “drove through a fence trying to back away from officers.”
10:45 PM: Here’s the stolen vehicle, a Tahoe – thanks to the neighbor who pointed us to it:

(This and subsequent photos by WSB’s Patrick Sand)
You can see the fence through which it crashed – beneath the vehicle.

11:25 PM UPDATE: We’re back in the area to check on the situation. The block where this is happening (4800 block of 47th) is now blocked off with yellow tape. A K-9 officer is in the area.

11:38 PM UPDATE: Just talked again with police – lots of new information. They say the suspect is in the house – and that he used to live there. He broke a window to get in tonight after driving the stolen car to this neighborhood; the people who were inside, who know him but are no longer on friendly terms, according to police, got out safely. Police also confirmed something we thought we’d heard in scanner traffic earlier – that the stolen vehicle turned up via signal from Lojack. One more thing – contrary to what we were told at the scene earlier, now they ARE investigating what they describe as the possible accidental discharge of a gun, but no one has been shot and no one is hurt. Still a developing situation.

11:42 PM UPDATE: Police report they have the suspect in custody.

8:50 AM SATURDAY: This is now on SPD Blotter – but nothing new beyond the information we learned at the scene just before the arrest.

10:54 AM: Thanks to Lola for pointing in comments to the video posted from Guardian One – what was happening while this coverage was starting last night. Will post it separately shortly but for starters, see it here.

    Comment by J — 9:41 pm January 31, 2014 #

  68. It feels like they’re circling my back yard, though it’s probably a block or two away. Like a previous poster, I’ve locked the doors, and closed the shades, too. I’ve got my nephews visiting from the eastside, having a slumber party at my house with my daughter/their cousin, and the kids’ eyes are pretty wide open at this “city living.” I can’t tell them that tonight it’s freaking me out a bit, too, because I’m supposed to be the calm one with everything under control! I hope they catch the bad guys SOON.

    Comment by Kristina — 9:42 pm January 31, 2014 #

  69. My friend lives on 48th. She said cops are at the end of her block towards Hudson. She heard the shots. I told her to stay inside.

    Comment by Lola — 9:42 pm January 31, 2014 #

  70. What Laconique said. I haven’t heard anything indicating “armed and dangerous” but you have to assume. Also, the cops even ask that WE (media) stay off the street when the K-9 is out so it can do its job.

    Comment by WSB — 9:42 pm January 31, 2014 #

    Comment by Katy — 9:47 pm January 31, 2014 #

  74. There are no injuries reported at the scene and while there’s always a chance we could find out otherwise later, generally there is a protocol that would be followed if ANY sort of gunfire happened, and there has been none of that.

    Comment by WSB — 9:48 pm January 31, 2014 #

  75. Could have just been the crash I guess, but it sounded like a shot. I’m fairly familiar with guns, by I did have my adrenaline going already at that point. We will see.

  85. Huge thank you to WSB!

    Comment by Beehive — 9:56 pm January 31, 2014 #

  86. Kerry – the tweets are automatically generated by police reports. There was a med-7 response at Fauntleroy/Hudson earlier but everything gone by the time we got there, so that explains it. It was much earlier, before dark.

  108. Thanks Koleah, that’s my main concern, what did this guy do to deserve all the attention? If a car theft/breakin I’m not nervous, but if a house breakin or violent crime I’m worried. I’m on 47th 1/2 blk away.

    Comment by Laura — 10:28 pm January 31, 2014 #

  109. If the pop was not a shot, it happened AFTER the office chased someone through my yard. Does not fit into the timeline as a crash. Maybe a door being kicked in?

    Comment by Jeff — 10:29 pm January 31, 2014 #

  110. This is nuts! I live a half block away and saw the start of it in the alley when the red truck came barrelling out of the alley only to see the 5 cop cars right in front of my house. He threw it in reverse and obviously hit something on his way through the alley. Life in the big city. My kids are a bit scared. Keep all the great info flowin’!

  115. That house (address noted above) has seen many “situations”. Could be a coincidence but…

    Comment by Rogersclan — 10:44 pm January 31, 2014 #

  116. This could be resolved if everyone brought their unleashed dog to this house and send them all in.

    Comment by Alki resident — 10:45 pm January 31, 2014 #

  117. Near as I could tell (which was somewhat confirmed by that tweet), suspect broke into a house. Police know which one it is and are trying to either get permission from owners to enter, or maybe get a warrant (warrant part is a guess on my part). Did not seem like they just wanted to enter. But they had a spotlight directly on the door of a house and were standing around watching the house.

its chilly out there. Went inside since there was no more actual activity.

    Comment by koleah — 10:46 pm January 31, 2014 #

  121. I live on this block. The red tahoe is one of 2 cars. Another small sedan hit another neighbors fence. Granddaughter of owner lives in the house that is being watched and she arrived at about 10 pm and has been on site.

    Comment by JWJewel — 10:55 pm January 31, 2014 #

  122. Police said suspect is in the house. They are waiting for a warrant and said we should stay inside our homes as suspect has a gun. Really would like this to be over now.

    Comment by JWJewel — 11:04 pm January 31, 2014 #

  123. Lola – we don’t know that yet. I heard the early discussion as they homed in on the Tahoe and as the helicopter narrated with the suspect going through the fence, and getting out and running. But that was after the chopper took a few circles over our area (east of Lincoln Park) before heading to The Junction. We’re going back to the scene again to check in – SPD to date has said nothing official about this via Twitter or blotter.

  126. I hear you, fpj! I’m right in the middle of it, with the K9 unit parked on Edmunds next to my house. No way I can let my dogs out in the backyard right now, no matter how much they beg. They’d hear the K9 unit dog barking, and try to go right over the fence. They’ll just have to hold it!

  127. My dog wants out too! I’m across the street from this crazy nightmare. Would like to go to sleep but have visons of bullets coming thru my bedroom wall. They have taped off 47th at Edmunds.

  128. Cops now on the bullhorn, calling for the suspect, by name, to come out with his hands on top of his head.

  129. Just added a lot of new information we got from talking with a scene commander. Still not resolved but they say the suspect IS in the house, and was known to the people who live there – because he used to live there. They are safely out. He was not welcome there any more.

  130. Sounds like they have him in custody. We are still in the area and heard it on the scanner.

  133. The police have been surrounding our house for the past three hours. Someone finally came to let us know what was happening. We heard the crash and stepped out to see what had happened and saw the man running towards are neighbors house at 4819 47th ave SW. Not 4816 as previously stated. Heard a window break and police were close behind. There was then a single gunshot anyone who says there wasn’t is wrong. The police then set up.a perimeter around the house and waited. After more than 2 hours they finally came to.tell us to stay down and away from the windows that the suspect was in the house next door and was armed. Within the next hour they began talking to him on the megaphone and telling him to come out with his hands up or they were coming in to get him. He came out without anymore incedent, was hand cuffed and put in the car. There is glass everywhere in the alley and he took out the other neighbors fence that was protecting their pool.

  134. Some of us do know the sound of a small caliber handgun discharging. Especially within a 100 feet. Gunshots and crashes sound very differently. Please don’t pooh, pooh a direct observer.

Thank you Jeff for the address correction. I was thinking the east side (even) and not west (odd) addresses. I am pretty much directly behind the house the car thief entered.

  135. Police investigating an accidental gun discharge. Sounds like a cop accidentally fired.
“Shots? What shots? No shots here!”
“Its all over the WSB. All these citizens heard you, rookie.”

  137. Thank you everyone for all the information last night.

The way we ‘keep’ the neighborhood, keep it safe and healthy. Is not to be afraid, communication, awareness and to be out and visible. To be ever vigilant. Build relationships, know your neighbors, know their friends.

I walk my dogs through the ally ways and streets late at night and early in the morning… imagine if we were all out walking our dogs, talking – and watching and building relationships and enjoying each others company. Harder to take a car or start of fight or… when the streets are crowded with people talking and laughing and present. Don’t hide – keep enjoying this wonderful place that is West Seattle.

  139. We’ll lets see first I’m a little concerned that the SPD said they had to wait for a warrant, which in this case is not true. They had probable cause to enter the premises when they witness the suspect break a window and enter the house(probable cause to enter the premises) Now at that point there is no need for a warrant. Now if the police see someone break into my house by all means break the door down and come in, just be loud and clear when entering. Also they should not deny that a shot was fired. People are not stupid and the SPD tried to act like it was a gate crashing. Seriously? I know they were trying to protect there fellow officers and I do understand that but when people in that area hear a gunshot please inform the neighbors around that area especially if they ask the officer. Thankfully no one was harmed. I understand the stress and adrrenaline that is going through these brave officers when moving onto a developing crime scene. I have been in thier shoes serving in heavy combat over seas and lets just say it can be pretty harry. I don’t want this to seem like I’m bashing the SPD but maybe just a hard critique. Again the good news is they secured the suspect minus the shot and no one was injured.

  140. They say he was there because he used to live there. Ummm ok it was the brother of the person who is living in the house. Tell me again there isn’t some shady stuff going down over there. I wish there was a way to get these people out of our nice quiet neighborhood. Ugh!

  142. Who is going to help clean up the damage? The ladies whose fence was ran over have only lived in the neighborhood for a few months. I know I’m going to go ask if they need any help cleaning up. It’s a mess. I hope our other neighbors will do the same.

  144. Thanks, Lola. Heard that all unfold on the scanner but minus the video at the time. Will add to the story for starters, might have to break it out later – scratch that, just went ahead & broke it out. http://westseattleblog.com/?p=263623 – which is also where we’ll add details of the suspect’s record, which I’m going through right now via court files.

  150. To the person who is trying to publish a comment with personal information about someone in the house from last night’s incident – please, if you believe someone is in danger or being neglected, CALL POLICE. Legally and ethically, we cannot publish comments or any other content with personally identifiable information about third parties. And more importantly, that’s not the way to get help – 911 is. Thank you – Tracy

  151. Yes, to whomever the WSB comment is privately directed to, please do seek assistance. This was a very provocative story, but if you feel like a third party is in need of some services, I hope you will/can follow up taking the next step to help them.

  152. Too bad the Tahoe didn’t wipe out the Bamboo that continues to creep under the fence. I helped work on the pool when I visited my mother-in-law who owned that property until her move to a care facility. Thank God Caroline was not there when this happened.
