You can help! Buy turkeys for White Center Food Bank

15 days until Thanksgiving Day, but you can do something now to help make it a more festive holiday for local families in need. The White Center Food Bank, whose service area includes part of West Seattle, would be thrilled if you can add at least one to-be-donated turkey to your shopping list:

The holidays are approaching quickly. To help us feed our clients we are asking for you to consider picking up a turkey while doing your shopping.

For us to purchase wholesale turkeys, it is over $1.00 a pound. Many local retailers are offering special deals on turkeys for much less. Look for deals while shopping and pick up a turkey or two and drop them off at the Food Bank Monday-Friday between 9 am-5 pm at 10829 8th Ave SW. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Here’s a map.

They would get a lot better response if they made an easy way for us to just “buy” a turkey remotely for say $25 online and just let the food bank order them. No way I am going to be able to drop off a turkey M-F 9-5.

I’m pretty sure they have online donations available at http://www.whitecenterfoodbank.org – thanks for asking! When the holiday gets closer, they often have a weekend dropoff time, and we will publicize that when we have word of it – TR

The reason the food bank is asking people to purchase the turkeys and drop them off is because the turkeys are over $1 a pound for them to purchase and cost less at the grocery store with club cards and promotions.
The food bank is open this Saturday from 11-1 and every third Saturday as well as Wednesday evenings.

There is a donate now button. Or, try calling their office, they should be able to take a card payment.

I think what sgg was suggesting was that they use the cash to let the employees go to the grocery store themselves. I don’t understand why a food bank would be required to buy from only one source. I would hope their regular distributor didn’t contract for a monopoly.

Rebecca, store offers usually have a limit of 1 per customer. It wouldn’t be very cost effective or efficient to send food bank staff or volunteers on repeated trips to the store. The food bank ALWAYS needs cash donations, so if donating a turkey doesn’t work for you, please just give money.

QFC has not yet released the per pound 2013 turkey rates, but typically they have been the best. I usually score 4 birds for donation before T-day but it all depends on how the holiday falls relative to a weekend. Both White Center and West Seattle Food Bank are close to two QFCs so that is what I usually look for.

      Yes. Monday-Wednesday next week they’re there 9 am-3 pm, 35th/Morgan.

Sorry, comment time is over.
