West Seattle Weather Watch: Wind alerts; afternoon storm updates

(Lincoln Park Way and Beach Drive, photographed by Greg Daly)
11:43 AM: The storm’s intensifying, and the National Weather Service now has wind alerts in effect (read them here). Here’s what the NWS says could happen, with a Wind Advisory for the area through 7 pm tonight, and a High Wind Watch for late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening:

*TODAY: SOUTH WINDS OF 20 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS AROUND 45 MPH.

*LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT: SOUTHERLY WINDS OF 40 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 60 MPH ARE POSSIBLE WITH A STRONGER SYSTEM.

If you haven’t already charged up your phone, flashlight, etc., now’s a great time, just in case.

1:07 PM UPDATE: More practical advice – check the drains around your home if applicable; we just spent an hour bailing and then digging out the one that is supposed to keep our basement from flooding (which was starting to happen). Above, we’ve added a photo courtesy of Greg Daly, of an overwhelmed drainage-system lid by Lowman Beach – if you see or experience storm-related problems (or otherwise interesting scenes), please send to editor@westseattleblog.com or text 206-293-6302 – thank you!

3:33 PM UPDATE: Nathan tweeted this photo of a tree down in Arbor Heights (thank you!):

He reports that it’s across 35th at 108th.

4:39 PM UPDATE: The wind is really picking up now – with the downpour accompanying it – stay safe!

4:51 PM UPDATE: Also via Twitter, we get a photo of another tree blocking a road, this time 48th at Eddy, just uphill/north of Lowman Beach heading toward Seaview:

Lights flickered in Highland Park 20 minutes or so ago. Charging the phone just in case.

Thanks! Somebody on Twitter mentioned a West Seattle flicker too – nothing on City Light map as of this moment http://seattle.gov/light/sysstat but VERY wise move to keep everything charged, especially with the possibility of stronger wind … TR

Several flickers off of lower Charlestown, (Fauntlee Hills??, not sure the proper name of the neighborhood.)

There’s a giant pothole that’s probably filled with water so you can’t see it on northbound Delridge a little south of Oregon. At least 8 cars have blown tires.

Downright scary. First we get a Seattle version of a Midwest summer – now Midwest fall rain?

Big branch blocking a lane northbound West Marginal way between 3rd Ave and the underpass of the 1st Ave Bridge

    • WSB September 28, 2013 (5:01 pm)

Thanks, Tricky! That’s at least the third downed tree/big branch in the area so far – and that last blast of wind/rain was enough to wreak more havoc …

Wow! I just drove by 35th/108th and there was no evidence of a downed tree at all. Thanks, City Light!

    • WSB September 28, 2013 (5:55 pm)

Heylady – It was just getting cleared when I went to check around 5:30.

Branch blocking uphill lane of California ave. below Hamilton viewpoint…

Yeah was heading home from shopping down south with my mom. Headed up HP Way to High Point in that squall, couldn’t even see the cemetery from the road on Sylvan! There was lots of standing water on W Marginal on the SB side at the intersection for the 1st Ave bridge too, the roadway is very rutted over there. Definitely a good weekend to stay in and watch lots of football!

That pothole on Delridge is no joke — thanks for te heads up! There’s the better part of a trash can jammed in there to warn folks now.

Slow down drivers, bout got killed on I-5 today tooo fast traffic, sudden stops near Spokane St exit, might as well have been black ice. Frightening.

I am going back to Vashon.

Sorry, comment time is over.
