Crime Watch: Burglars hit West Seattle Runner; watch for the loot

That’s a frame from surveillance video that’s now in police’s hands, showing burglars that stole thousands of dollars in merchandise from West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor), and doing costly damage in the meantime – note the boarded-up window:

A WSB reader and WSR customer tipped us on this; we contacted proprietors Tim and Lori McConnell, who tell the story here:

We were burglarized Friday morning around 3:30. Two men broke into our locked downstairs door by prying it open and defeating the lock. They then broke our exterior window to gain access to the store. They were in the store for about 8 minutes and took a duffel bag out with them. They returned about 45 minutes later; the first (burglar) took a small bag with him and the second one had our cash drawer, which contained no cash. He dropped it, climbing out the window, and it popped open. When he noticed no cash, he left it. He also got his bag stuck while climbing out, spilling the contents in the upper hallway. The second (burglar) also took a few pairs of shoes with him, mens size 12.5, Saucony, Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayanos. Both suspect were fairly tall, and we believe one of them had been in earlier during business hours with his girlfriend.

They stole all of our GPS watches and heart-rate monitors, including the non-working displays. They also stole all of our Tifosi sunglasses, and some random items including running headlamps and flashing clip-on lights. They did not get our register cash, as we keep that in another location, but they did break into our small lockbox where we keep extra one-dollar bills and change, taking all the ones (about $80). All told it was about $5,000 worth of items, not including the cost of the window and the new cash drawer.

We have video of both of them, which is how we know what time they broke in. They moved the camera that faces the entry door to Anytime Fitness, but I assume they were not aware about the other cameras that we got most of the video from. The video has been given to SPD Burglary Division. We also have witnesses that called 911, but SPD didn’t get there in time. We ask that anyone that is approached to buy any items from Polar, Garmin or Timex, or random Tifosi sunglasses without the case, contact SPD. Or if you see them for sale on Craigslist or EBay, please let us know. It’s just merchandise, and its not like having your personal items stolen (that happened to us last month in Vancouver), but it still feels like a violation. Especially when we watched the videos of them carrying away all of our merchandise that we make a living from. We do have insurance, but like all insurance, we have a deductible, so we will be out at least $1000 plus whatever items we don’t know were stolen.

We hate to see this and want to let all other small businesses know this happened. We really thought we were safe from this type of crime. Maybe not immune, but definitely not on crooks’ radar. Who would rob a running store? Well, apparently the two guys who did this would.

We want our friends, runners, customers and neighbors to know we still love West Seattle, we still live here and this will not deter us from continuing to operate in, and support all, of West Seattle.

Thanks, Tim and Lori

Again, contact police if you know anything about the burglary – or the stolen items. If and when we get clearer surveillance images and suspect descriptions, we’ll publish a followup.

That is so horrible. I’m having a good feeling that these guys will get caught soon.

  • Gametiime September 7, 2013 (11:34 pm)

So sorry to hear about this, Tim and Lori. We’ll post about this tomorrow and let our community know to be on the lookout for the items. Hopefully these guys will get what they deserve!

So sorry to hear about this! Your WS neighbors support you and hope these guys are caught.

I will pass the word amongst my friends. Sorry that this happened to your store. I truly hope that the police can figure out who these thieves were. Try and keep being positive. Karma has no expiration date.

Owning a small business is hard, even during the best of times, and events like this can be very disheartening. Our thoughts and well wishes are with you as you struggle to recover and we’re sure the good guys at SPD will be able to catch these scummy people soon. As a community we need to stop by and purchase a little something from The Runner’s Store so they know this wonderful community stands behind them. I’ll try to swing by this week.

I’m so sorry Tim and Lori. I hope they find these guys and I’m sorry your business was affected.

  • kayo September 8, 2013 (6:56 am)

I hope they catch these creeps!

These guys were in the store for 8 minutes and then came back 45 minutes later? And witnesses called 911, but the police didn’t get there in time?

Hopefully the video during business hours with the possible suspect being in the store with his girlfriend will have good footage to hopefully catch these POS.

BTW, it looks like this guy is decked out in military gear from head to toe. That’s kind of curious. Wonder if he is/was actually military or just a wannabe.

    So sorry to hear this!

Sending well wishes to Tim and Lori. WS Runner is a great business and member of our community!

  • Lauren September 8, 2013 (8:52 am)

So sorry! I’ll be stepping up my purchases at West Seattle Runner to help support you guys.

Lori and Tim are fantastic members of the West Seattle and greater area running communities. In addition to carrying great products and being very helpful/knowledgeable shop owners, they support the community through free classes/groups and fundraising for local and global causes. They put on the Beat the Float 5k this year and have a long history of supporting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. They have been awesome to me as I took up running this year as part of TNT to honor a friend who passed away from Lymphoma. I am going in today for my usual bi-weekly stock up, but am going to do some extra shopping to support them. I hope others who have benefited from their presence in our community do the same!

So sorry to read about this. I know what this feels like and can sympathize with what they’re going through. Of course there’s insurance, but it doesn’t; replace that feeling of well being that’s been destroyed. Hope SPD finds these creeps. Will continue to support WSR and appreciate the service they provide.

  • Tim September 8, 2013 (10:45 am)

Thanks for all the positive comments, we appreciate the support. This is why we love living in West Seattle, the act of a few pathetic idiots is far outweighed by the overwhelming number of quality people that live here. This will end up being a small setback in our long term plans as a West Seattle institution. Again, thanks everyone, see you on the streets!

Hopefully the crooks will at least get some exercise now, but have a “run in” with cops when they do.

  • Shannon September 8, 2013 (12:20 pm)

So sorry, Tim and Lori. Hoping these jerks will be caught quickly!

  • Tim September 8, 2013 (1:57 pm)

And for those wondering about the video, we do have another camera that has way better pictures of these guys, we just haven’t figured out how to do screen shots from it. But we have turned a copy over to SPD. Hope these two Mensa members get neck pain from having to look over their shoulder. SPD will catch you and we will ask for you to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Our running community is awesome, you will not be able to sell that stuff around here. We are also checking EBay and Craigslist constantly, as are many of our customers. You messed with the wrong people, runners stick together and look out for one another. Not to mention that West Seattleittes also take care of one another. Enjoy your ill gotten gain. You may want to wear one of those heart rate monitors.

As a runner and fan of this store and the owners, this really sucks. I’m hoping they will get these guys and you know what they say—What goes around comes around. I will keep my eyes peeled for anybody trying to pedal running and or fitness gear.

  • Shannon September 8, 2013 (8:21 pm)

This really sucks! Especially as a runner, I am incredibly saddened to hear this. I hope that they can catch these jerks ASAP, and I will refer my running friends to West Seattle Runner in hopes that the running community can help out a bit.

I woke up to a very load alarm about 4:10 Friday morning but didn’t know where it was coming from. It stopped about 4:40 and started ringing again just a few minutes later.
Tim and Lori. You guys are the best.

  • Shannon September 8, 2013 (9:05 pm)

Also, have posted on my Facebook to hopefully reach out to all my running friends around here. This kind of thing shouldn’t happen and people should know by now that runners are not the community to mess with.

  • Ben September 9, 2013 (7:48 am)

WS Runner is a great local business benefiting not just runners but anyone in WS who values vibrant community. Obviously the crooks are outside that circle — boo to them, and well wishes to WS Runner in moving past this.

  • Community Member September 9, 2013 (8:15 am)

I am just puzzled how after being inside for 8 minutes, they were able to return in 45 minutes. I understand police did not arrive quick enough, but that would be a 53 minute delay (depending on alarm systems). I am puzzled. Best wishes, thinking of you in this time as we too are your customers and community members.

  • Dan September 9, 2013 (12:53 pm)

I think I’m going to stop by and give you some business.

  • Tim and Lori September 9, 2013 (2:20 pm)

Just want to say thank you to everyone that has stopped in and bought stuff to support us. We know some of you weren’t due for shoes yet, but got them anyway. This is why we love West Seattle, the people we meet and get to interact with on a daily basis make this job so much fun.
Again, thanks to all of you for making the events of last week a distant memory with your goodwill. You are awesome!
    Tim and Lori.

Why do thugs feel the need to rip off good hard working people for a quick buck?! Sorry to hear about your robbery. WSB and WSR, if there is any way we can help, please let us know.

  • scout15 September 10, 2013 (9:01 pm)

Please try to find a way to down load the photo’s. We would love to help catch these punks!!

Sorry, comment time is over.
