Update: 2 in custody after reported carjacking in West Seattle

4:55 PM: Also happening right now: A police response in Highland Park. We’d been monitoring this just before the aforementioned port rescue broke out. Per scanner traffic, it started as a report of a possible carjacking, but then the story got more complicated. They’ve been searching for suspects in the Highland Park Elementary vicinity. Police explain it via Twitter this way: “Officers investigating very strange carjacking report in West Seattle. Started off as report of 6 ppl fighting in 3800 blk of Delridge……suspect fled the scene, but later called 911 himself, spoke briefly with an operator and hung up……officers are now looking for the suspect and a white Toyota Corolla.” Scanner indicates there may be a South Park address associated with this.

5:40 PM: No official updates; a WSB crew just checked the Highland Park vicinity where police were earlier, nothing happening.

5:57 PM UPDATE: Via Twitter, SPD now says, “Officers have taken two people into custody in connection with the carjacking in W. Seattle. More details when we sort all this out.”

LATE-NIGHT UPDATE: No official update yet, but activity into the evening in Highland Park may have been related; we’ll be checking back in the morning.

3800 Delridge ? as in- the ‘safe access’ place?

    • WSB July 2, 2013 (5:11 pm)

have no idea. Block numbers, not specific addresses, is how police/fire usually communicate.

There is a helicopter hovering above my house in Pigeon Point right now adjacent to the 3800 block of Delridge…

There were 4+ cruisers in the 14th/Trenton area but they have moved on…

Safe Access is in the 3800 block, as is Delridge Mini Mart, Uptown Espresso, Subway, and Skylark Cafe…
As a neighbor of Safe Access, we have had no issues that I am aware of. It’s always quiet there, mellow even.

    what is “Safe Access”?

    • WSB July 2, 2013 (5:29 pm)

      Medical marijuana.

  • annaeileen July 2, 2013 (5:34 pm)

I live right by there and thought it was a vet with an odd name. like safe access to vet care. I have been called naive more than once. Yes, it’s been a quiet neighbor.

that’s good to know…i thought safe access was where a kid could go if they were being followed or bothered by someone.

    guess times have changed…..

    • WSB July 2, 2013 (5:40 pm)

Access point is a type of place where medical marijuana can be procured. Anyway, this is the website for the place on Delridge.
      .
      http://seattlesmedicalmarijuana.com/
      .
That might not be the address where the “carjacking” was first reported, though …

This was not near Safe Access, I witnessed it in the parking lot of the Delridge Deli/Uptown. Safe Access is the same block number, but it’s on a separate piece of property closer to the bridge.

    • WSB July 2, 2013 (5:54 pm)

Thanks, Boone. That’s a long block!

For those unawares… The key is the “green cross” (contrasted to a red cross.) With this revelation in mind, just have a look when you are driving around town. Virtually every neighborhood in Seattle has a dispensary or two. It’s certainly not unique to our neighborhood.

Perhaps some would have preferred that the “Value Stone” signage remained. (The former occupant sold granite countertops.)

We’ve had no problems with Safe Access. Living just a few hundred feet away, the only thing we ever hear are the live bands at Skylark. And neither are any source of troublemakers.

No need to jump to conclusions.

Hilariously, in Europe a green cross denotes a conventional pharmacy. Imagine how many tourists have been confused.

Three high speed unmarked cars, sirens blaring just went flying through my neighborhood, turned off 35th headed up Dakota toward California.

      Unrelated incident at Calif/Charlestown.

Hello I am wondering if this has anything to do with what is happening on my block I live on the 5400 block of 5th ave sw we have 4 cops and 2 under cover cops surrounding a house up from me. Any Ideas????

    • WSB July 2, 2013 (7:53 pm)

Don’t know but am trying to check.

  • Trina July 2, 2013 (7:57 pm)

Great, now they have the back closed off looks like they might have the whole house blocked off

  • Jenn July 2, 2013 (8:19 pm)

Please, let us know. We’re on 5th Ave SW as well, lots of cop cars down the street; another just arrived.

  • neighbor July 2, 2013 (9:35 pm)

    so what happened at calif/charleston?

    • WSB July 2, 2013 (9:45 pm)

I will probably include it in something later, waiting for more details on this Highland Park thing. But long story short, two guys got into a fight. One of them went into his van and put on two holsters with guns. No gunfire, no gunpointing, just a bit of a scare.

  • Tim July 3, 2013 (9:22 am)

Yesterday evening I got a call from a neighbor (I’m out of town) saying that several cop cars and some unmarked cars with undercover cops all had 8144 5th ave sw surrounded. First a lady was arrested and taken away. A little later 2 men were also arrested and taken away. Does anyone know any details?

    • WSB July 3, 2013 (10:30 am)

Since SPD has not posted an update on this incident, I’m calling them right now and hopefully that will clear up whether either of the Highland Park scenes (including the one you mention) were related.

      • WSB July 3, 2013 (11:15 am)

Update – they were related, but the whole thing is so “convoluted,” as an SPD spokesperson notes, they won’t have enough information for a blotter report till later today. Also, while some people were in custody for a while, nobody was actually booked for investigation of a crime. – TR

Just heard that a stolen car was just left in these people’s drive ways. The people at this house were not involved but sense the car was reported stolen at gun point cops felt in necessary to treat all these people like criminals. Way to go seattle pd.

  • Boone July 11, 2013 (1:36 am)

    Tom-
The cops were told the car was at the house you are referencing, which belongs to the family of the man witnesses say stole the car at gun point. Since they don’t personally know what the suspect looks like, but have info that he’s armed, it’s in the interest of safety to ask people to come out of the house at gunpoint. Asking a person out of their house at gunpoint is not treating them like a criminal, it is being safe about a situation. Officers have homes to return to just like anybody else and assumed an armed and presumed dangerous criminal was in the house, due to information given to them by witnesses who KNEW the suspect.

To state they are assuming the entire family at the home is criminals is insulting to the officers. They are looking out for their own safety while working extra hours on their shift to keep people like yourself safe.
How would you feel if people called you out for being concerned over your own safety?
Whether you hate them or not, they sacrifice time with their families for situations like this. Have some respect please, and think through a situation before you make a judgement call.

Sorry, comment time is over.
