11:34 AM: Cannon fire can be heard offshore as the Seafair Pirates make their way toward Alki Beach – with landlubbers awaiting them. (added) Listen to the cannon blasts in our video:

11:44 AM UPDATE: They’ve arrived, wading ashore as usual, after the Global Diving and Salvage craft brought them as far in as it could. (added) This year’s Captain Kidd is West Seattleite Rusty Harper:

Onshore festivities commence now!

ADDED 12:13 PM: Above, the Pirates accompanied ashore by the West Seattle Hi-Yu delegation; below, the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle‘s been here handing out special pirate hats, and Kiwanian Mike LaFranchi shares smiles with a recipient:

More to come. Events on the beach continue into the afternoon, including bouncy toys for the kids.

  1. This is always a big event and we love having people come visit our area, but please remember to take your garbage with you when you leave. It gets really old picking up after people who don’t seem to know how to pack out what they pack in. And please stop blocking our driveways and the sidewalk corners! It makes it VERY DANGEROUS for people to cross the streets.

  2. Did 2 F 18′s just do a fly over? They just flew over my house.

  3. We saw them head west over south Alki Point. I am looking them up to see what it was about – if I can find anything.

  4. I also heard the high-maneuvering/military sounding jets flyover, but missed seeing them with my own eyes to verify the type of aircraft.

according to the above FAA (NOTAM) post, I wonder if the mystery jets were part of the Tacoma Wings and Wheels event at the Tacoma Narrows Airport (TIW)
note: Reason for NOTAM – “Due to high performance aerial demonstrations during the Tacoma Wings and Wheels Event Type : Airshow”
However, I see no F-18 flyovers listed on the Tacoma event website.

  7. Cranky, you’re awesome! Seafair 2013 — no Blue Angels and no Pat O’Day (shame on you KIRO) .. but we’ve still got PIRATES! ;-)

  8. What was up with all the people parking their cars in the bicycle track? It was completely blocked by at least 20 cars/ trucks! Will the police officers I saw down there ticket such a flagrant and dangerous action?

  9. Parking Enforcement was out on a bike at Bar-S during the Little League championship games, as we tweeted while checking out the games post-Pirates. But you do need to call it in, so hope you did.
