Update: Crews extinguish brush fire in Riverview

6:13 PM: Fire crews have responded to a brush fire reported on the north end of Riverview Playfield. The scanner suggests arson is suspected and that someone was seen running away; the fire marshal has been called to investigate. No word of any injuries; we’re en route to check on damage. Also per the scanner, the fire is reported to have been in an area of roughly 6,100 square feet.

8:02 PM UPDATE: Thanks to Alan for the photo; he went over after the fire trucks left: “I hiked down to see where it was and took a picture. Sadly it appears to have been in a section that had recently been planted by Nature Consortium. You can see the melted grow tubes. Fortunately, it could have become much worse. The grass around it is tinder dry and we have a good breeze going.”

Near neighbors reported hearing fireworks before they heard the fire and saw the smoke. Helicopter is gone now, but two trucks of firefighters were still working as of a few minutes ago.

Thanks to our neighbors that called this in. Things are very dry out there right now and this could have been much worse. Hopefully they got a good view of the person running away.

I walked the trails very early this AM with the dog. It is dry, dry dry. It definitely could have been so much worse. Wow.

This happened yesterday (Monday) in Arbor Heights, at one of the churches on 32nd. Heard a loud boom, saw teens running down the street, then noticed the grass was on fire.

We were out in the yard and my dog started freaking out because of the fireworks, I took him inside.. About 5-10 minutes later, I noticed two late teen / early twenty somethings heading suspiciously fast (west on Holly St)… Then looked out on the green belt to see obvious smoke! Called 911 right away. It moved extremely quick, in the 5 or so minutes it took Fire to get there it appeared to triple in size, I could hear the crackling from the street. A very helpless feeling. Thankful we were home, since it could have gone unnoticed for a lot longer and been much worse.

If anyone in Highland park noticed two light skinned, young men, one was tall wearing a red plaid shirt.. The other was shorter wearing a black hat and black shirt. Please, contact the Police.

Sorry, comment time is over.
