GiveBIG one-day donate-a-thon: 2013 list of local participants

Again this year, dozens of local nonprofits are participating in today’s GiveBIG one-day donation drive coordinated by the Seattle Foundation. The money you give to any or all of the participating nonprofits helps them be eligible for a “stretch pool” of partial matching funds, to be distributed proportionately depending on how much each participating nonprofit raises during GiveBIG, by 11:59 pm tonight. The BIG catch: You **must** donate through the special pages that participants have on the foundation’s website, NOT via theirs own websites. So again this year, we have made a list of all those special pages for participating West Seattle, White Center, and South Park-based or -founded nonprofits (and a couple parent organizations). The special links take you to pages on the Seattle Foundation website with background information and links to the organizations’ own sites, as well as the donation links to use for this one-day event. (P.S. Please let us know if we missed a WS, WC, or SP-based organization – post a comment or e-mail us ASAP at editor@westseattleblog.com – thanks!)

Last year, WestSide Baby received a match of $3000 from the Seattle Foundation to stretch all of the giving on this day. It really does make any of your gifts go further! Many thanks to the West Seattle Blog team for taking the time to pull together this list so that our community can easily participate today by supporting local non-profits.

I had TNP on the list – will check in case I filed over a version – TR

FYI, Click & Pledge who powers the online donation event is charging a 2.95% “transaction fee” of your total online credit card donation. Seattle Foundation does not have anything to do with this fee.

Thank you so much for posting this list!

There’s also Neighborcare Health – http://www.seattlefoundation.org/npos/Pages/NeighborcareHealth.aspx – they operate High Point Medical & Dental Clinic, as well as several other sliding scale clinics around the city.

So many great local orgs doing Amazing work! Thanks for the list!!

  • Nancy @ WestSide Baby May 15, 2013 (3:02 pm)

@ Betty at Alki – Online giving always includes a credit card processing fee that non-profits absorb as a cost of doing business. Sometimes there are also “per transaction” flat fees or service charges – but not here. A donor can definitely choose to avoid that with a cash or check gift (outside of this GiveBig event) and should give in whatever ways feel right. We have found the fee is outweighed by the “stretch” gift by at least 12% in the past so that it’s a big net win for us.

Those fees also are charged by credit card companies and other financial processors, when the recipient is a business. We take ad payments a couple ways – PayPal and a company that processes credit card numbers – and 3 percent is the average fee. (Something to keep in mind when pondering the price of services and merchandise – unless you’re paying in cash, the merchant generally isn’t getting everything you’re paying. A datapoint.) – TR

Thank you guys so much for putting up this compendium! #GiveBIG is working already. Our documentary film The Girl Who Knew Too Much has received numerous donations today, and we’re hopeful we can double that with the help of the Seattle Foundation. What a great thing!

  • LisaM May 15, 2013 (10:22 pm)

Could this list be kept on the blog somewhere for future reference?

    • WSB May 16, 2013 (12:40 am)

Lisa, everything on WSB, going back to our start in 2005, is archived. So you can always find it. However, it doesn’t really have much use beyond this one-day event – it is by no means a comprehensive list of nonprofits in our area – I’m not sure what the criteria was for inclusion here, but there are lots of great organizations not on the list, and the rest of the time it would be better to donate directly to them. That said, just google GiveBIG West Seattle Blog (or GiveBIG in the search box on our site) and you can find it … TR

  • WSParent May 16, 2013 (6:00 pm)

West Side Baby, West Seattle Food bank and… WestSide School?!?? Which of these things is not like the other…?

    • WSB May 16, 2013 (6:13 pm)

Don’t know what you’re trying to suggest, WSP, but all three are nonprofits. As is everybody else on the list. The Seattle Foundation screens participants and each and every link on this list goes to the page the SF created and approved for participants – TR
