Update: Crews repair water break south of Junction

9:46 AM: Seattle Public Utilities crews are working on a water-main break right now on 42nd SW south of Edmunds, and as our photo shows, 42nd is closed at that spot. (Thanks to Brian Presser from TouchTech Systems for first word of this!)

11:34 AM UPDATE: Ingrid Goodwin of SPU tells WSB the repairs are complete and water is back on. She explains that it wasn’t a water-main break: “The break was on a single service line (3/4 inch) leading to the home(s) of a customer. Crews will remain on site until about 3 pm today, back-filling the hole and cleaning up the site. At this time, we don’t know what caused the leak.”

That was flooding when I drove past around 9pm yesterday so I was surprised they hadn’t started working on it until this morning. Out of curiosity, how much would this compromise the earth in the vicinity of the break and is it at a greater risk of future sinkhole?

We’re checking with Seattle Public Utilities’ communications team for specifics – just wanted to make note of the street closure as soon as our photographer got over to it. Did you call and report it? I know the road number by heart but not SPU’s hotline so I’m checking on that too. – TR

I called and reported this after I returned from 7-11 by Erskine around 215 am this morning, Thought it was strange that there was so much free flowing water. Then figured it was a water main break and reported it.

Thanks. I’ll add whatever more I find out from SPU. Just wondered because you know how it goes sometimes, people see something but think “oh, somebody must have reported that already” and in reality nobody reports it because everyone is sure somebody else already did.

There was an SPU incident truck at the intersection last night at 8pm, with water all over the roadway, but I did not see the source of the water or anyone appearing to be working on any aspect of it.

I noticed an SPU truck parked in the turning lane on 42nd last night around 6:30. There was water going down 42nd. The truck was gone by 8:00 when I came back thru but the water was still there.

They did some work mid-block (south) about a week ago … hope it didn’t cause this problem further down.

I didn’t call because I had forgotten about it by the time I got home and, yes, I did assume the people who live and park right there would have called.

I’m the one who called and reported it at 5pm when I got home yesterday. They said they hadn’t heard anything about it until I called. The City then came and assessed it around 7:30 and then started working on it late last night/early this morning.

when i passed that site around 7am this morning, the water was flowing out and it appeared no one was working on it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
