West Seattle Crime Watch: Skateboard assault; door kick-ins; stolen moped

We start this West Seattle Crime Watch roundup with an incident that brought several texts/calls tonight because of a big response:

Police responded to an assault call in the West Seattle Stadium area. According to Southwest Precinct Operations Lt. Pierre Davis, a woman under the influence of the drug known as “ecstasy” attacked someone by hitting them with a skateboard. Lt. Davis says she’s in custody. The victim was taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

Also tonight, two reader reports. First one is about attempted burglaries (these came up at tonight’s West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting, too, and we’re working on the full report on everything discussed there). John in the 5000 block of 40th SW reports:

My back door was kicked in yesterday morning at 7 am, as was my next-door neighbor’s door. Nothing was stolen out of either house. My neighbor was home at the time, I was not. I understand a house two blocks from me had the same thing happen around 3 pm yesterday.

From Miranda, word of a stolen moped – the one in this montage:

She says it was stolen Sunday night or Monday near 59th/Alki: “The moped is a Motobecane; it has pedals but is missing it’s motor as we were working on updating it. The front wheel is bright turquoise and the back on is a maroon-ish color. It’s very unique so it’s hard to miss.” If you’ve seen it, call police.

Dang, what would she have done if she WASN’T on E? Not a drug that typically makes people aggressive.

Is it my perception, or is the level of crime on a steady rise around here? I’ve lived here for a long time, and don’t remember stuff like this happening on a such regular basis.

Not typically, Ajax, but I have seen people react…poorly to it, shall we say…

@Eldrad, that question comes up on every crime watch report and the answer is always NO. Numbers show no type of increase. It might be your perception.

I moved to West Seattle in 2010, has it always been this bad?

We almost got broken into, but none of us in the house will be surprised if we do by the way things are in the area. Luckily (or not) we have opposite schedules and there is always someone home, plus we have a dog that is super territorial.

jc: I’ve lived here since 1999. It used to be worse. (As I often tell people when this question arises, I haven’t been woken by a SWAT team wishing to have a chat with my neighbors in almost 10 years! Wish I was kidding about that…)
    .
The last time I looked at the numbers it seemed like property crime was up a bit, but “a bit” does not equal an epidemic.

Wow, I haven’t seen a Motebecane since the 70’s Moped craze, that is cool, I hope you get it back and get it restored.

As for the woman on drugs: Stupid and violent people do stupid and violent things regardless of stoned or sober.

Drugs of any sort (including alcohol) simply make it more likely you will do stupid and violent things.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I guess my perception is tainted as I have been the victim of repeated vandalism on my property and car, which started a couple years ago. Will keep my eyes peeled though.

JC, I’ve lived in Fairmont Springs since 1998, and it was worse back then. The formation of a Fairmont Springs email tree and the block parties have really got people to meet the neighbors and have served to make our little block of blocks a pretty un-desireable place for crime. It still happens, but the word is spread immediately and all the neighbors go on high-alert.

It will be interesting to see what kind of impact our new police chief and new mayor will have on dealing with our crime issues.
