West Seattle Crime Watch: Stolen red Saturn to watch for

Rude awakening for Jennifer, who reports an overnight car theft:

Our car was stolen last night, between the hours of 8 pm and 7 am. We’re at 11th and Thistle [map]. The car is a red ’96 Saturn (plate 802-UTE) and had nothing of value in it, so we assume it was taken on a joy ride and hope to update you with its safe, little-to-no damage return. (Fingers crossed.) Police have been called. In the meantime, we thought we’d let the neighborhood know.

This also just went up on SPD’s @getyourcarback Twitter feed, and as it advises, if you see this car – call 911.

Seriously low rate of arrests for car thieves vs other cities – no wonder it’s such a problem around here..no repercussions.

Jennifer, I’m sorry that your car was stolen, but don’t give up hope. When our car was stolen on election night WSB was kind enough to post my wife’s message as they just have yours, and the SPD were VERY responsive! The car was found parked in a neighborhood four days later. The police told me that thieves steal cars to drive around and steal mail. We got the car back, completely undamaged, and with a few items left behind for us (flashlight, etc.), which we turned over as evidence. We are fortunate to have the West Seattle Blog, and the police took everything very seriously, including notifying us the moment the car was located and secured. Good luck!

Thank you, Chad! Your comment gave me a “bump” of hope after a full day of no news.

Hey all. Our car was found with some, but not much, damage (not enough to file an insurance claim) on 24th and Cambridge – so just a handful of blocks away from where it was taken. The driver must have been quite tall – my boyfriend is 6’5″ and the driver’s seat wasn’t moved – and the interior was wet as though the car had been left with a door open. (We’ll need to have the ceiling fabric and other upholstery tacked down – sigh.) They only took the face plate from the stereo and it appeared they *intended* to take the coins…but instead they left them in a baggie.

SPD called to tell us where it was and left the police report inside; no prints, no follow-up.

Thanks to all those who spread the word and kept a lookout.

Sorry, comment time is over.
