This week’s 99 and Spokane St. Viaduct closures, night by night

For late-night and early-early-morning drivers, here’s our weekly night-by-night list of the major closures most likely to affect West Seattle drivers on Highway 99 and the West Seattle Bridge (Spokane Street Viaduct section) this week:

TONIGHT (Sunday night 8/12)
*Alaskan Way Viaduct/99 – Closed southbound between the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge for pre-tunnel reinforcement work, 9 pm-5 am. Also note, if you drive 99 north of this stretch, this is the last night for a closure that’s lasted longer than a month. From WSDOT:

Beginning Monday, Aug. 13 at 5 a.m., the right lane of southbound SR 99 will reopen between Republican and Harrison streets. The lane, along with access to and from southbound SR 99 from nearby side streets, closed in late June to allow crews room to relocate underground utilities in preparation for construction of the SR 99 tunnel’s future north portal.

Major closures night-by-night for the rest of the week, ahead:

MONDAY NIGHT (8/13)
*Alaskan Way Viaduct/99 – Closed southbound between the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge for pre-tunnel reinforcement work, 9 pm-5 am

TUESDAY NIGHT (8/14)
*Alaskan Way Viaduct/99 – Closed southbound between the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge for pre-tunnel reinforcement work, 9 pm-5 am

WEDNESDAY NIGHT (8/15)
*Alaskan Way Viaduct/99 – Closed southbound between the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge for pre-tunnel reinforcement work, 9 pm-5 am
*Spokane Street Viaduct – Closed eastbound between Highway 99 and I-5, 10 pm-5 am.
8/15 update – SDOT has canceled the SSV closure for tonight

THURSDAY NIGHT (8/16)
*Alaskan Way Viaduct/99 – Closed southbound between the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge for pre-tunnel reinforcement work, 9 pm-5 am
*Spokane Street Viaduct – Closed eastbound between Highway 99 and I-5, 10 pm-5 am. When this closure ends on Friday morning, the eastbound onramp from Harbor Island will reopen after its long closure.

FRIDAY NIGHT (8/17)
SATURDAY NIGHT (8/18)
*No major closures

And another early reminder – as noted in our recent overall project update – the 1st Avenue S. offramp from the eastbound Spokane Street Viaduct will close for repaving starting Monday, August 20th; the closure is projected to last about five weeks.

Thanks for always being on top of reporting these closures. I work nights and usually take 99 home. So glad you post this in advance so I can plan ahead and take an alternate route.

Happy to help. I worked swing shift in TV, and early mornings too, for quite some years and would find it helpful myself if I were still doing that :) – TR

I just received an alert about the Wednesday and Thursday Spokane Street Viaduct closures. It’s still just eastbound, right? I can take the West Seattle bridge exit from I-5? I’m working late in North Seattle and would love to make sure how to get home! Thanks for this list. I bookmark it every week!

No changes in the information sent to the media and posted on the SDOT website. Did what you received make it sound like something different?

The text message alert wasn’t different, just vague and didn’t mention it would only be closed in one direction. Thanks again!

Sorry, comment time is over.
