The latest weekly roundup of upcoming traffic alerts (see it here) brings us first word of plans for the next weekend-long closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. It says Highway 99 will be closed from 6 am Saturday, March 24, till 5 am, Monday, March 26, “in both directions around the clock for the bi-annual Alaskan Way Viaduct Maintenance Inspection.”

    Isn’t that inspection semi-annual, not bi-annual?

really??? inspection of what? Maybe they don’t know that most of it is gone. It does seem like it could take less time. Maybe the length of time has to do with what they get paid?

The most significant stretch of the elevated portion still stands, including the section that had to be “shored up” after settling a few years back. Here’s our report on that from four years ago:

This is a shorter time period than previous inspection closures, which were usually “late Friday night till early Monday morning.” And while they usually announce the early Monday reopening, often the actual reopening is a lot earlier – we’ll see what happens! – TR
