Happening now: Sanislo Elementary’s book-and-bake sale

That’s barely the half of it – literally – at the Sanislo Elementary book sale and bake sale, happening till 2 pm at 1812 SW Myrtle, raising money for the 4th graders’ annual overnight camping trip. Hardbacks and paperbacks for kids and adults – we even found some vintage-1940s hardbacks about topics including American history and the news business. Browse the hallway, and don’t miss the bake sale:

Before our whirlwind visit ended, we also got a pitch for a special drawing they’re having – $5/ticket for a homemade New Mexican dinner for six, delivered to your home. Never been to Sanislo? Lovely forested campus, and don’t miss the portrait of its namesake inside the entrance.

Tonight a group of neighbors went to the West Seattle Community Choir Spring Concert held in Olympic Hall at SSCC. Paula Herd is the Choir director and she is a West Seattle treasure. The theme for the evening was “Let’s Dance!” and not only did she have a variety of dance tunes from all over the world, she also had asked a Samoan student at SSCC to perform a native dance. The young woman wore a lovely outfit and the dance as well as the music was wonderful.

The Sing-Along featured its traditional three songs and the audience just belted them out, one right after another. As I sat there in my own neighborhood, I was overwhelmed with a sense of “Wow!” We live in the best neighborhood in Seattle. We have a great deal of diversity and we get to interact with people from all over the world right here in Puget Ridge. How did we get to be so lucky to find this wonderful neighborhood? I am not sure although I remember back in Jan. 1991 when I first got here thinking it was pretty special. I have never forgotten that feeling seventeen years ago and tonight I re-affirmed the sense that this is one heck of a place to live.

Awesome. I wish we had received notice of that concert, it wasn’t in our calendar! If you know anyone associated with the group, please ask them to let us know about future events so we can include them and maybe even cover them! – TR
