West Seattle Crime Watch: Stolen SUV to watch for
February 24, 2012 at 3:08 pm | In Crime, West Seattle news | 12 CommentsShane e-mailed on behalf of a friend whose SUV was stolen in the Delridge/Holden area:
It is a 1988 Chevy Suburban, WA Plates: WA7TZ (her ham call sign).
It is golden brown with a wide black stripe and has chrome wheels and dark tinted windows. It has roof and mirror mounted antennas. I’m kind of hoping it sticks out and someone has seen it. There was some ham radio equipment in it as well that I doubt is still there although likely useless to whomever stole it.
The owner is a real nice lady who gives a lot to the community and I’d like to see her get it back.
Please call 911 if you see it.

When was it stolen?

Last night.

Oh no! I know the owner, she actually volunteered a weekend on Vashon Island last May to teach our ham radio course and I passed with flying colors thanks to her. Very nice woman, I remember her Suburban – hope it’s recovered quickly.

Would a ham radio signal be easily traceable to location of broadcast, should the perps (or, perhaps, unsuspecting buyer of the radio) use it?
.
Hopefully the fact that the victim is involved with the “original” internet ;-) along with this report, will increase her chances of recovery of her SUV.

That’s awful. Hopefully your vehicle and your gear turn up, you never know. I’ll help pass the word on this.

Thanks for posting this. Im hoping that between the vanity plate, multiple antennas, and size of the rig it will stick out. I imagine the theives ran it outta gas and left it somewhere, hopefully not too beat up…

Hope ya find er. But what is the acronym for ham?
Comment by gypsyhippie — 7:26 am February 25, 2012 #
I just got an email telling me SPD recovered the vehicle last night. There was a broken window and the steering wheel column was damaged (it was hotwired). Although there was some minor theft, the expensive electronics were left behind. The tank was empty. Thanks to all for looking out for it!

gypsyhippie,
A HAM is an amateur radio operator.

Glad it was recovered relatively unscathed, Shane!
