West Seattle Crime Watch: Police search for robbers

2:24 PM: Big police search under way right now for armed robbers: Southwest Precinct Lt. Pierre Davis confirms a “jewelry/pawn shop” in the 9400 block of 16th SW (map) was held up by four robbers wearing masks. He says officers are currently “conducting a search for evidence and suspects.” We also heard some potential description information on the scanner – a Crown Victoria car that “looks like an old green-over-red taxi” might be associated with the robbers. As always, call 911 if you think you see or hear something related.

2:37 PM UPDATE: There’s a sizable police presence off Roxbury that we are told is related to the search for the robbers and ‘evidence.’ And this is indeed why there was at least one TV helicopter over the area.

3:21 PM UPDATE: Police are still searching – right now we’re seeing some in Roxhill Park. We stopped by nearby Roxhill Elementary, too, after hearing it mentioned as part of scanner discussion; the staff told us the school “sheltered in place” for a short time.

4:15 PM UPDATE: Per scanner traffic, three vehicles, including a Crown Victoria, were being searched in connection with this investigation. But Lt. Davis says nobody’s been arrested yet.

8:33 PM UPDATE: From SPD Blotter, more details and descriptions:

On February 9th at approximately 12:26 p.m. four male suspects entered a combination grocery/jewelry store located in the 9400 block of 16th Avenue SW. At least one suspect was armed with a handgun. All four suspects were wearing dark-colored bandannas, black hooded sweatshirts and gloves. The suspects confronted the 58-year-old female victim (the storeowner and the only other person present inside the store at the time of the robbery).

The suspects ordered the victim onto the ground and repeatedly threatened to shoot her. The suspects then went directly to a safe that was open and is located behind the counter. The suspects grabbed several display trays containing jewelry and fled out a back door. A witness saw the suspects run out of the business and flee the scene in a silver van.

Responding officers located a silver Dodge Caravan in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 9400 block of 27th Avenue SW. A witness saw several males matching the suspects’ description exit the van and flee the area in another vehicle described as a red and green Ford Crown Victoria 4-door sedan. The Ford sedan and the four suspects remain at large.

Investigating officers impounded the silver Dodge Caravan which was taken to the evidence garage for processing.

The four suspects are described as follows:

Suspect #1: Asian male, early 20′s, 6 feet tall, 175 pounds, brown eyes and black hair.

Suspect #2: Black male, late teens, 6 feet tall, 130 pounds, brown eyes and black hair.

Suspect #3: Black male, late teens, 6 feet tall, 165 pounds, brown eyes and black hair.

Suspect #4: possibly a Hispanic male; no further description.

Robbery detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate.

Anyone with information about this incident or who may know the identities or whereabouts of any of the involved suspects is asked to call 911 or the Seattle Police Robbery Unit at (206) 684-5535 and refer to this incident. Anonymous tips are welcome.

I just came on to see if I could find out why I was hearing a helicopter hovering around near my neighborhood. I guess this must be it. I’m at 36th & Barton. Hope they find the suspects.

Is it possible these are the same suspects that held up the pawn shop next to Taco Time in white center a few weeks ago? Just curious as to if there was any connection. I hope they catch the scumbags. Thieves make me sick.

B/R/S – We’ll be at the public safety forum in White Center tonight and expect to be able to ask that question – that one was a King County Sheriff’s Office case and this is a Seattle case but I’m sure they’re working together – TR

  • Curious in Westwood February 9, 2012 (5:09 pm)

There is a helicopter circling the Westwood area now, any connection?

  • Westwood Deb February 9, 2012 (5:15 pm)

Yeah, the helicopters moved on, hope for a good reason!

    • WSB February 9, 2012 (5:29 pm)

As far as we can tell, it was a different TV chopper trying to play catch-up on this.

  • Nate Grey February 9, 2012 (5:25 pm)

And that’s why White Center is not West Seattle. Hope these idiots get caught!

  • W February 9, 2012 (6:17 pm)

I was just there and must have missed it. I DID see two guys drinking beer and smoking crack at the bus stop on front of DSHS. I told the bus driver and she said there was nothing she could do. SO HAPPY TO BE HOME NEAR ALKI!

  • Todd February 9, 2012 (6:22 pm)

That car was mentioned a few weeks ago about an unrelated item – possible burglary link? Anyway, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the car around – if I see it, I’ll call it in…

I love white center you know this art walk we have going tonight I was out at the wc last summer for their art walk and they had a showing in of all places a medical marijuana dispensery and part of the show was off all things a topless woman getting her torso painted by an artist. Well received and man what courage she has. Nope won’t find anything close to that tonight in west side oh well I think I’ll skip it and go get some ice cream in White Center. I love White Center

Please note, we’ve added new info from SPD Blotter with many more details about the robbery. Also, I am currently at the North Highline public-safety forum, where White Center’s storefront deputy BJ Myers said that while he didn’t have a lot of details, his understanding was that the robbers in this case did NOT appear to be the same ones who held up Pawn Pros in White Center a couple weeks back. – TR

Again with the “Scumbag” comments. Their must be something in the water. West Seattle loves that word. I for one do not.

I used to work at Marv’s broiler, In the summer time we would work in the kitchen with the back door open because it was so hot.110 plus degrees Used to here automatic gun fire on a regular basis got to be old news after awhile.. My point is that this type of thing has been going on for the past 30 plus years. Its nothing new it just that now we have the internet and have instant news where it used to take weeks for a story to circulate, now its instant. So it seems there’s more of it happening. When in fact its the same old sh*t.And on a side note I hope they catch the ba$tards.

@W, plenty of stufff happens down on Alki so get over yourself. It really bugs me when people feel the need to make themselves feel better by dumping on someone else and their neighborhoods, especially when it is evident they have no idea what goes on outside their little enclaves.

  • miws February 9, 2012 (11:49 pm)

Cindertang, how long ago did you work at Marv’s?

I was a dishwasher there, when Marv took the place over from Busey’s, on January 1, 1976 (I had worked for Busey’s for a month.)

Worked the evening shift; 6:00pm-2:00am, Fridays and Saturdays, with the occasional Sunday afternoon, for nearly two years.

@Chris- Thank you for that comment, I second you on that! Some people don’t understand or are completely naive to think that no crime happens where they live. There is no such thing as a safe place, crime and other nonsense happens everywhere!

  • tootrue February 10, 2012 (3:31 am)

W – get off your high horse. Remember the home invasion style robbery that happened a few months ago in the….SHOCK!….Alki neighborhood? Criminals will just find an available target, be it Alki or White Center. Rather have my business robbed than my own posh Alki home!

  • Alki Resident February 10, 2012 (7:01 am)

We get home invasions ,car break ins, robbery and assult down here, just as much as anywhere else. The only thing that upsets me is the speed the police are going on this stretch of narrow two lane road because kids and people with ear buds on may not hear them on time in crosswalks. But I will say,the police always have a presence down here which is great and they get to know the people.

Thanks DF. White Center Arts has been very successful in bringing art to WC. We are having a fundraiser for WCA on May 16 when we unveil the next round of roller skate sculptures. We invite all of West Seattle to come and see the amazing things changing in White Center. It takes community to build community.

Go to http://whitecenterartwalk.blogspot.com or our Facebook Page for details on the skate sculptures and how to participate.

are there any updates today? maybe i walked out of the room- but i didn’t hear this on the news last night, anyone else?

    • WSB February 10, 2012 (10:48 am)

I checked with SPD first thing this morning, no arrests yet. I’m not sure why TV stations responded to this at all (remember, they have 22 counties to cover) – there wasn’t anything to make it regionally notable – so by the time they got to 11 pm, I’m sure it fell out of the lineups. – TR

  • Christie February 10, 2012 (1:58 pm)

it sure sounds like the same guys that held up the White Center pawn pros – they were basically wearing the same thing, but they didn’t have bats this time. Hope they get caught!!

    • WSB February 10, 2012 (2:38 pm)

By the way, I just checked AGAIN (2:40 pm) and no arrests so far. Very active case though, we’re assured. We’ll keep following up.

  • Rob February 11, 2012 (8:40 am)

Yep, I’ve seen that taxi looking crown vic between genessee and dakota on 47th. I think I even posted here about it (not sure if I posted the plate), but the suspects mentioned matched who I saw driving too. They were clearly up to no good.

  • churchlady February 11, 2012 (11:13 am)

Crime happens everywhere!Just so happens WC has a couple of blocks with at least 5-8 taverns/bars that are dives, and the DSHS around the corner. Anyway, hope these maggots are caught. I did see the video of the Pawn shop robbery and noticed that one of the idiot robbers mask came off during the robbery. Hope they can match his ugly mug and lock him up!

  • DollarTreeNut February 12, 2012 (10:29 pm)

    @ W:

LOL. Oh my gosh, are you KIDDING me? You rally reported people, ( most likely down and out)smoking crack, TO THE BUS DRIVER? Really, what do you expect them to do? They can only make the useless phone call to 911 that you could, its not as if they hold some super power that will get ahold of the police better than you..

as if they cops would even respond.

i can just imagine it now, ” Um excuse me um Mr/Ms. BusDriver, uhm, that gentlemen over there who has nothing to do with the bus is uhm USING DRUGS!!! Im so uncomfortable looking at him for the split second we happen to be driving by, can you MAKE IT GO AWAY!!! at least until i get to my safe house on Alki!!!!”

Sorry, comment time is over.
