Update: Man shot on 11th SW in Highland Park

(More photos added 9:36 pm; this one was substituted for previous cameraphone pic)
7:44 PM: Police and fire units are at the scene of a reported shooting in the 9400 block of 11th SW in Highland Park (map). We have a crew on the way. According to WSB contributor Katie Meyer, scanner traffic says the victim is a 20-year-old man, gunshot wound to the back but “conscious and alert.” Early description of the vehicle they’re looking for is a “late model blue Pontiac” last seen going east on Cambridge.

8 PM UPDATE: The victim is being taken to Harborview Medical Center. WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand is at the scene and says Gang Unit officers are there helping investigate.

Neighbors say they heard four shots; officers/detectives are looking for casings among other evidence.

8:17 PM UPDATE: SPD Blotter has just published essentially the same info we’ve already reported – noting that it’s “preliminary and subject to change.”

8:28 PM UPDATE: SPD Capt. Neil Low just briefed media at the scene. The victim is described as in “serious condition” as he was transported. According to Capt. Low, the victim was standing outside a car, when another car went by and fired shots; the driver of that car discovered the street was a dead end, and made a U-turn to get away. The victim is believed to be from “nearby.” Though as we noted earlier, there’s Gang Unit members at the scene, they’re not confirming whether this is believed to be gang-related.

7:48 AM UPDATE: Police have added a few more details to that same item on SPD Blotter (linked above):

The victim sustained a single gunshot wound to his back, it was considered serious, but not life-threatening. Officers and Gang Unit detectives located one .40-caliber shell casing in the street and a bullet hole in a house in that block.

I live around that area and heard several bangs/shots not too long ago. Moments later,I heard so many sirens blaring down the block. Pretty scary right now.

Wow. Suddenly glad I didn’t go running this evening.

Well, if you’re in Highland Park it’s always wise to be running…and don’t forget to zigzag.

  • marty September 7, 2011 (9:20 pm)

Gang related? Anybody getting tired of this crap???

  • Jenna September 7, 2011 (9:21 pm)

I know some people who live right where this happened.
They were told that the Blue Pontiac was parked at the end of the street for quite a while so I doubt they did a U-turn after discovering it was a dead end.
I’m glad that the guy is alive, but I hope that revenge won’t come from this..

Happened around the corner from my house. I was outside when it happened and saw the Pontiac drive away (didn’t see inside). There have been fights and disturbances outside the house where this happened for several weeks. I hope this brings an end to this and helps the neighbors come together.

When is this going to stop? Its not, its going to get a lot worse. What or who can stop it? Nobody. You want to feel safe dig a hole. Do you want to help do some thing a bout it? Its going to take every body. There is no money, the resources are not available. So that leaves you and I. How do we start it? That’s what community centers are for. That,s where we start. All in favor say aye.

Is this why we have a helicopter hovering near by?

    • WSB September 7, 2011 (11:02 pm)

RR – there wasn’t a chopper in the first hour before police mostly cleared the scene, which is when we (and one TV crew) were there. Are you still seeing/hearing a chopper now? Could be a search, could be unrelated, I’m about to check with police regarding whether they’ve found their suspect yet … TR

Delridgian, that is one astounding story. Year and a half before we moved here for my then-TV-news-producing job, so I hadn’t heard it before, though I recall distinctly how much crime happened in the Hilltop, to the point where some of the more blasé people with whom I worked didn’t even want to send crews down there.

  • RR September 7, 2011 (11:10 pm)

Not hearing it anymore. Maybe I was just wishing for a large fan to cool things off.

  • U September 7, 2011 (11:29 pm)

I live on this block and stuff has been happening all summer here whether it be lots of yelling at night, fights, beer bottle smashing, and I just don’t feel safe.

  • Christina September 8, 2011 (7:47 am)

This is the 4th shooting in that general area since I moved in last October. It’s getting to be pretty scary!

  • ZD September 8, 2011 (8:27 am)

What can be done to make it safer for our community?

  • TeeTaw September 8, 2011 (10:42 am)

    A great story indeed.

People of White Center, take back your neighboorhood the old fashioned way, FIGHT BACK!!!!

  • CeCe September 8, 2011 (12:39 pm)

My parents live on right on that st, and I live 3 blocks away. I grew up in White Center, and it seems as if things have become worse.
Most of the households on that block include children or grandchildren, and many of the families have been there for 10+ years.
As for change, i dont think it requires more police, let’s face it, they dont make us feel safe. it requires the people in the community and neighborhoods to pay closer attention to what is going on in their surroundings. People these days are such shut ins, living on computers and cell phones. We miss life, and that when life manifests itself.
Pay attention people. when we see cars that dont belong chillin on our streets, do something, before something is done for you.

  • lucky chick September 8, 2011 (3:07 pm)

Well put, CeCe. Although a police presence does comfort me, it’s hyper-vigilant neighbors that make me feel safest. If someone’s breaking into my home when I’m not there, the police probably aren’t going to wander by, by I can always hope a neighbor is paying attention. With all this [seemingly additional] crime lately, I know I keep MY eyes open more than I used too.
    .
Please keep us updated on whether they catch someone!

To all those who were affected by the recent shooting: our team will be dropping off invitations to our next meeting. We are going to start on 11th ave SW and work our way around the neighborhood. Our meeting is next Thursday and we will be discussing how to form a Block Watch. The meeting starts at 6pm and is held at 9421 18th Ave SW in White Center. That’s the St. James Church meeting room (the Hillborn room).

Sorry, comment time is over.
