Restaurant news: Zippy’s Giant Burgers announces vacation

If you haven’t seen the announcement in the WSB Forums – the Zippy’s Giant Burgers crew are giving advance warning that they’re going on vacation starting August 13th, reopening August 22nd. And they’ll be back to opening on Sundays too as of August 28th. (Got another favorite local burger to suggest people try while they’re gone? Add a comment!)

I like the $1 burgers with condiments on Tuesdays at Alki Tavern. They’re called “Wimpy burgers” after the burger-mooching character in the Popeye comics and cartoons.

I like the burgers at West Seattle Bowl. Big and juicy!!

  • onceachef August 3, 2011 (11:22 am)

Jak’s at happy hour…great burger, great deal!

  • Melissa August 3, 2011 (11:54 am)

Pepperdock at alki has pretty good burgers too

    Elliott Bay Brewery and Pub

I’d recommend The Swinery’s burger. The buns are amazing; very tender, buttery, and almost croissant-like. They also have a good variety of high-brow mustards and other condiments. The grill in the courtyard is open from 11-3 for lunch.

Go to magic lanes wensday through sunday after 5pm. they have a good burger and the best happy hour around. $1.50 wells and $1.75 pints. $1.00 games on sunday.

    • WSB August 3, 2011 (12:15 pm)

Unfortunately as we have just reported yesterday on White Center Now, Magic Lanes has shut down for good. – TR

Other spots for great burgers in West Seattle?

    1) Jak’s – a different experience than Zippys for sure, but check out Jak’s for lunch or happy hour. Their burgers rock.

    2) The Bridge – surprisingly, this place has a really great burger as well. It’s right across from the West Seattle golf course – not open for lunch. Worth checking out.

    3) Circa – awesome burgers here too and their fries are off the hook, even moreso with a side of ranch to dip them in.

    Do it.

B-Town Burgers in Old Burien. Awesome Burgers and Shakes!

  • ws August 3, 2011 (4:24 pm)

Is it just me, or does it seem like Zippy’s couldn’t care less if people showed up. Take a vacation when everyone craves a burger-the middle of summer… doesn’t make sense to me.

Higgins is right, The Swinery burger (and everything else they do) is fantastic. It’s usually my standby. And you have to add with some of that swinery bacon to give it an extra health boost! :) Don’t forget the tallow fries. Mmm

BURGERMASTER on Aurora!!! You can eat in your car and for 2 people its under $20!

  • Jasperblu August 3, 2011 (5:36 pm)

Built Burger in Pioneer Square. West Seattle-ite owned from what I hear. See you soon Zippy’s (probably tonight!).

  • Kelly August 3, 2011 (5:44 pm)

I’m going to 3rd the rec for The Swinery… those guys are a wonderful bunch of guys and their burgers are awesome.
I’m head of recipe development for a Seattle burger chain (Blue Moon Burgers) so I’m a bit of a burger snob… The Swinery does not disappoint.

  • westseattledood August 3, 2011 (6:19 pm)

    I am loyal Zippy’s. I will wait. ;)

Pick-Quick in Fife. It reminds me of In-N-Out

  • LS August 3, 2011 (7:10 pm)

Wingdome in the Junction has awesome burgers, fries and salad!

Luna Park? Gross all the way around

When did Fife become “local?” If we’re going that route then why not McAndrew’s Burgers in Lecce, Italy (Puglia – Southern Italy in the heel of the boot)? Not quite fast food (45 minutes for a burger if they are not busy) but not too bad. The fries are really good as they’re cooked in olive oil. Just be careful not to order the equino (horse) burger if that sort of thing bothers you.

  • NinjaRider August 3, 2011 (11:05 pm)

Truthfully? I like to get the bacon cheddar patties and some Macrina Bakery buns from ThriftWay and bring’em home and do’em on my own grill. OK, no deep fryer, so no fries, but I’ll live; some chips’n’dip will be fine, and there’s just something about a homemade burger that can’t be beat by any commercial place. TW also has a goodly selection of brewski, or soft drinks if you’re on call (as I am for the next week), and dessert out your ears… although if it’s ice cream you’re after to chase your burger, get thee to Husky Deli…

Of course, if one wanted to be fancier, TW also has a *plethora* of cheese… something I had once that was very good: Regular beef pattie, but with roma tomato slices, fresh basil, and fresh mozzarella. Can you say, Caprise Burger? NOM.

5 guys, Burgermaster, and Jaks….my alternatives.

  • Sarah August 4, 2011 (6:44 am)

Hey, try Uncle Mike’s BBQ just a couple doors down!
Bust out and try something new and oh sooo good. They even have a vegetarian BBQ sandwich. We love this place!

  • Michelle August 4, 2011 (10:24 am)

I agree with Uncle Mike’s BBQ. VERY good food and Uncle Mike is really kind and nice, he’ll personally come to your table when you’re there. Awesome place.

    • WSB August 4, 2011 (10:39 am)

I meant to note earlier … Uncle Mike’s is temporarily closed because of a small fire last weekend in the kitchen. Don’t have an ETA yet. We published news of the fire here as well as on White Center Now, and will update as soon as we hear how they’re doing. – TR

  • Dude August 4, 2011 (1:22 pm)

    Nice plug, TR. Quite original.

  • noah August 4, 2011 (5:39 pm)

So we’re okay with a business that was “moving ” for like three months to go on vacation soon after reopening? Seriously? It makes me wonder if the closure is financially motivated

  • cj August 4, 2011 (9:24 pm)

We went back to Zippy’s after they moved but were kind of pushed out by aggressive customers grabbing tables and no order in customer lines of any kind. Ending up eating at a nearby bbq place instead =/.
On a positive note we found 6 Arms just east of downtown, their fries are to die for.

  • cbeb26 August 4, 2011 (10:06 pm)

eats market cafe has a lot of tasty burger options. cowboy burger with huge onion rings and spicy bbq sauce is my fav. local and yummy and way more comfy than zippy’s

  • Mike August 4, 2011 (11:25 pm)

I’ve yet to have a Swinery burger, but since everything else they sell is pure carnivore heaven, I’d love to try one.

  • mgarden August 5, 2011 (8:03 am)

Over the moon for Blue Moon burgers – wish they had a place in W Seattle! Love Jak’s; the happy hour burger is an awesome deal. Will have to try The Swinery…

  • big mac August 22, 2011 (10:28 am)

Who has a grand opening then turns right around and shuts the door for a 10 day vacation? Nobody up until now. I ate there… once.

Sorry, comment time is over.
