Followup: Seattle Lutheran student wins Pokémon championship

6:42 PM: This’ll be a great “what I did on my summer vacation” story: We mentioned last night that David Cohen, a 16-year-old student at Seattle Lutheran High School in West Seattle, was in the final 16 at the Pokémon card-game world championships in San Diego. This afternoon, he won the title in the Masters’ division (click the tab for that division to see his progress). Here’s a photo from the official website.

ADDED 11:03 PM: We are reminded in the comment section that West Seattle was home to a world champ four years ago tooJeremy Scharff-Kim.

Congrats. But what does one do to become a Pokemon champion?

Can’t quite find a simple explanation online but there are numerous local tournaments for the game and you just keep working your way up, like other types of sports/games/hobbies. The players he beat in the final matches today were from The Netherlands, Mexico, and the U.S., so it really does seem to be a “world” championship. – TR

it’s a card game. my son was world champ in 2007 – maybe there’s something in west seattle water! we also had a national champ from w.s. (in 2008, i think). west seattle is just full of champions of all sorts!
congratulations david! i wonder if he got the phone call from the l.a. area collector minutes after winning?? :)

Thanks for the reminder! Now that we’re in the fifth year of serious news here, my institutional memory is not always bringing these things up automatically – we had a short blurb on that four years ago: https://westseattleblog.com/2007/08/world-champ-from-ws
      .
That IS pretty amazing – TR

    Very impressive! Congratulations, David!

Funny about the phone call. He sold his prize cards immediately this time. He was runner up two years ago, didn’t sell them right away, and never got an offer like that again.

Sorry, comment time is over.
