West Seattle Crime Watch: Stolen car’s owner shares advice

From Jason, via Facebook:

Our Honda Accord (white – yr 96) was stolen last night from the corner of 18th & Kenyon. Police came by to make a report and said there has been a rash of Honda thefts in the area…kids taking them for joyrides and then dumping the cars up north or else where. Police recommended, especially if you have a Honda, to get a club for the steering wheel !……

Here’s other police advice for how to try to prevent car theft.

My Honda was stolen in May… Turned up in an abandoned garage in Auburn in small enough pieces that they put it in a pick up truck to take it to the wrecking yard. I was told that there is a ring that is targeting West Seattle Honda owners who’s cars are parked with no one in front of them. Someone pulls up and tows it away, never sounding the alarm. So, a word to the wise if you own a Honda – Try to park in a way that it can’t be towed without your knowledge!!!

What amazed me recently was, when reviewing the SPD twitter page, the number of Subaru’s being stolen. Not sure if it was a coincidence or what, but a large number of them. I always thought Honda’s were/are king, but the Suebee’s were quite active.

My ’97 Nissan was stolen in May from in front of my house in Westwood. Dumped in Sea-Tac, nothing stolen. No idea how they broke in or started car since there was no damage.

and when using the club, but it on your wheel with the lock towards the windshield. A tip I learned from a police officer after my car was stolen. IF a theif decides to spend the time messing with the lock, it will be harder for them as they can’t see what they are doing. Made sense to me… Hope your car is found in good condition.

Update: Car was recovered. Police called to inform that the Honda was discovered in north Ballard. Nothing taken from car and it is running fine – still with full tank of gas. Not sure what the point of taking the car was, but glad to have it back ! Went right out and bought a club…
