West Seattle Crime Watch: ‘A terrible ripoff’ & 3 more reports

Four West Seattle Crime Watch notes as the weekend comes to a close. First, the one to which Kevin tipped us, with e-mail headed “A Terrible Ripoff” – it’s about what you don’t see on this door, any longer:

The opening-soon Junction restaurant/pub A Terrible Beauty (California/Edmunds) is missing an ornate metal door-knocker. After Kevin’s note came in, WSB contributor Katie Meyer went over to find out more. Seems it turned up missing yesterday, and they speculate it might be a case of metal theft.

Sorry to say there’s no photo we can point you to so that you would know it if you saw it, but Katie says ATB’s co-owner Jenna Shannon Garvey O’Brien describes it as “(matching) the hardware on the door, which is pretty dark patinated brass, looks nearly black – it was round, about 3 inches, with a loop or ring that swung as the knocker. It was original to the antique door they got from a reclamation/salvage place, and they had taken the hardware off, painstakingly sanded/refinished and re-stained the door, then screwed the hardware back on.” Jenna told Katie they regret not nailing or gluing it to the door, since, Katie reports, “they’ve learned to nail everything down from their other establishment, where someone walked off with an ornate Celtic cross from inside the restaurant, and someone else walked out with a brass urn and an antique washboard!” Three more Crime Watch reports ahead – a parking-lot hit-run and a GPS theft – plus an arrest report from the Southwest Precinct:

From Becca, a Morgan Junction hit-and-run:

Last night around 6 pm I headed up to the California and Fauntleroy Junction to grab a bite to eat and watch the Western Conference Game. I parked behind Starbucks and grabbed a bite to eat. When I arrived I was the lone car on the west side of the parking lot (behind Starbucks), well, no one was parked within several spaces of me.

When I came out around 7:20 pm I had a fresh dent which cut down to bare steel on the driver’s front wheel well area.. If anyone saw who hit me I would appreciate a shoutout. My car is a burgundy 1996 4 dr Camry with racks on top and Share The Road Plates on it. I wish folks would realize how much beer money behavior like this costs their fellow humans.

From Robin, east of Morgan Junction:

GPS stolen from our truck in front of our house (37th & Morgan) between the 14th at 5PM and the 15th at 5:30 PM. Police report filed. Sucks – but at least the truck was still there!

And finally, a note received from Southwest Precinct operations Lt. Pierre Davis on Friday that we hadn’t had the chance to share yet – no further details so far (we’re pursuing), but just a bit of good news to cap this Crime Watch roundup:

Our SW Precinct Detectives located and arrested two burglary suspects (Thursday) afternoon. The two were identified via video footage burglarizing a known Highland Park establishment. Great piece of work by our two detectives.

One thing we want to stress: WHATEVER crime happens to you, big or small, PLEASE report it. Lately we’re starting to hear from more people who HAVEN’T – and even if it’s small, at the very least, you can report it online. You can find the link any time on the Crime Watch page.

If I knew, I would have included it. I will be checking back with Lt. Davis tomorrow – this came in fairly late on Friday. – TR

Some people truly SUCK! What happened to common decency? I just don’t understand how people can be so thoughtless and cruel… it’s so very disappointing and disturbing!

As my friend’s mom used to say, “We just can’t have ANYTHING NICE around here!”

At first I thought about the metal scavengers I used to see early in the mornings at our old address[alley view], but then I thought it would have taken a bit of effort and risk to get the piece off the door being such an open location so I think maybe a deliberate act. I might suggest though putting out a have you seen me poster or a few as if the door piece was a lost pet. Might be just eccentric enough for West Seattle to help find it. Who knows the thief might even be wearing it in public LOL.

A sad “welcome” to the Junction for ATB – sorry this happened in our back yard – other people’s kids…

nice way to welcome people to the neighborhood :(

i am almost always proud to live in west seattle, to have caring neighbors and concerned community members who look out for each other and go above and beyond in almost all respects.

i’m not going to lay blame in this situation but i will hope that with enough blog conversation and awareness that this has happened in one of the most heavily trafficked areas of the peninsula, maybe the person or people who did this will reconsider their selfish act and return it to its rightful place.

I hope that urn had no one inside it. Even idiots would know if there was someone’s ashes in it because it would be heavy as heck to carry.

Why do people steal… I think in their minds the gain out weigh the risk. We need to work on the Risk

  • RJB May 23, 2011 (8:23 am)

So sorry to ATB…not a nice way to welcome neighbors…

Sorry to hear about that, but saying they’ve “learned to nail everything down” implies that you either think of your customers as crooks, or that I’ll be dining with crooks if I eat there. Try this next time:

“I’m always surprised when something like this happens because our customers have been like family at our other place. But every family has a crazy uncle or two, and while something like this is always a little disappointing, we’re still extremely excited and grateful to opening a new business in a wonderful community like West Seattle.”

Mitch – Sorry if it is unclear. That is a quote from Katie reporting on her conversation with Jenna, not a direct quote from Jenna. – TR

Sorry, comment time is over.
