One week from tomorrow, four swimmers from the Dolphins swim team based at West Seattle Family YMCA (WSB sponsor) will compete in the last regional meet of the fall/spring season. Just last weekend, more than 50 WSY Dolphins swam in the last big competition – and we have a report tonight from their head coach, Kyle Homad:

The West Seattle Y Dolphins swim team took 12th place at the Pacific Region North YMCA Swimming Championships last weekend in Federal Way. Twenty-five teams from across five states, including Alaska, Oregon, Wyoming and Idaho, competed in the meet.

The WSY Dolphins 12-Under girls relay team of Brynn Snodgrass, Maya DeGasperi, Angelica Gil, and Julia Olson raced to a 9th place finish in the 200 medley (2:24.49) and 8th place in the 200 Free (2:05.07).

The 12-U boys Dolphins relay team – Oliver Starkweather, Carlos Morales, Ricardo Martinez and Tyler Barker – finished 5th in the 200 medley (2:22.56) and 7th in the 200 freestyle relay (2:06.66).

The 14-U WSY Dolphins relay team of Darla Long, Karen Woodworth, Rose Morgan and Haley Kormanik came in 7th in the 200 medley (2:10.66) and 6th in the 200 freestyle (156.74).

In the 21-U relays, the Dolphins team of Eric Reiff, Jeffrey Kasahara, Andrew Khim, and Michael Stewart finished 13th in the 200 medley(2:02.81) and 12th in the 200 free (1:47.34). The team of Elizabeth Yamashita, Julia Hadley, Olivia Borgmann, and Mary Arscott finished 16th in the 200 medley (2:14.80) and 17th in the 200 free (2:00.58).

Of the 57 swimmers on the WSY Dolphins roster, 20 met the qualifying standards for this championship meet. Many swimmers scored points for the team in every event they swam, meaning they finished in the top 16, or turned in personal best times. Three swimmers consistently earned a spot on the award podium to receive gold, silver and bronze medals: Michael Stewart, 15, Karen Woodworth, 14, and Ricardo Martinez, 11.

The final meet of the fall and spring season is the Northwest Region Short Course Age Group Championships, to be held March 18-20 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. The meet, which is sanctioned by the USA Swimming Association, will host the fastest swimmers from seven states, including Hawaii, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon and Idaho. Four WSY Dolphin swimmers will represent our local Y: Michael Stewart, Karen Woodworth, Anthony Tran, and Ricardo Martinez.

The WSY Dolphins swim team has been a member of this community since the 1950s. We continue to have excellence in and out of the pool with a competitive swim program committed to developing youth as good people and great swimmers.
