Double-the-limit speeder stopped on West Seattle Bridge, SPD says

The newest brief update on SPD Blotter warns again, “The Aggressive Driver Response Team is coming to a neighborhood near you.” In a neighborhood near us, its recent catches include:

On March 8th, Aggressive Driving Response Team officers stopped and ticketed a driver on the West Seattle Bridge for driving 92 mph in a 45 mph zone.

That’s the only WS note in the update, but we thought you’d be interested.

Good grief, what’s wrong with people??
They should do a speed trap on Beach Drive too. From what I hear, there is a woman who regularly speeds in the mornings.

  • shane March 10, 2011 (5:00 pm)

I’m surprised it was only one.

  • Genesee Hill March 10, 2011 (5:05 pm)

WSB: Thanks for the update. Love it when these people get nailed!

  • Mn March 10, 2011 (5:08 pm)

    Wow 92 that’s impressive

  • james March 10, 2011 (5:26 pm)

I thought you were talking about wind when I saw the tweet that said “92 mph on the West Seattle bridge”.

  • Rfaivre78 March 10, 2011 (5:28 pm)

I am so sick of the aggressive drivers. I started riding the bus to work. Now I dont have to worry about the growing population of stupid drivers. Its unacceptable the way people drive. Take a chill pill.

  • Mn2 March 10, 2011 (5:33 pm)

92 mph on the bridge? Must be an insecure male with a physical shortcoming.

Hope he enjoys his ticket and increased insurance rates :)

  • JanS March 10, 2011 (5:42 pm)

seems like they may have a death wish….that’s scary!

  • DRW March 10, 2011 (5:47 pm)

When your in a hurry, don’t rush.

  • S March 10, 2011 (5:52 pm)

That’s rediculous!! REALLY, 92? Very unnecessary. I almost got rearended the other morning going to work, because, I slowed down at the Viaduct… You know, where the Speed limit signs with the bright orange flags and flashing yellow caustion lights say 35MPH and the car behind me apparently didn’t think it applied to them. The roads were wet and they fish tailed and barely missed me. Excuse me for doing the speed limit. Why is everyone in such a damn hurry that they need to put other peoples lives in danger… 92.. WOW!! STUPID!!!

    This was posted on SPD Blotter last Friday;

On March 3rd ADRT officers on patrol around the city issued the following tickets:

West Seattle Bridge – 45 mph zone: one at 77 mph, one at 65 mph and one at 62 mph.

Highland Park Way SW – 30 mph zone: one at 52 mph and one at 51 mph.

SW Admiral Way – 30 mph zone: one at 52 mph and one at 50 mph.

East Marginal Way South – 35 mph zone: one at 83 mph!

On March 4th an ADRT officer on patrol on the West Seattle Bridge (a 45 mph zone) issued the following speeding tickets:

one at 72 mph, one at 70 mph, one at 67 mph, three at 65 mph and one No Proof of Insurance ticket.

On another patrol on a stretch of Highway 99, a 50 mph zone, the following tickets were issued:

one at 79 mph and one at 70 mph.

Help with the economy, keep speeding, more partols!!

  • JoB March 10, 2011 (7:01 pm)

    james1
    impressive..
i had no idea there were that many terminally stupid people behind the wheel in West Seattle

  • rob March 10, 2011 (7:06 pm)

i’d like to know why 92 in a 45 gets you a ticket and not a trip to jail.

  • MMB March 10, 2011 (7:17 pm)

Nice to know they are getting some of them. I often see high-speed drivers on the bridge. They need to watch “I-35” more (or at all), though. Talk about crazy speeding…the speeds don’t get as high as what’s quoted above but it’s pretty dangerous.

  • Not Proud (but Just sayin) March 10, 2011 (7:50 pm)

A long time ago, in a land not that far away, Red Rider ran his scirocco 115 over the west seattle bridge late one night and lived to tell about it.

  • NotMe March 10, 2011 (8:01 pm)

I have said it before… this series of speed traps is really starting to work. There aren’t anywhere near as many idiots going up and down that Admiral hill over 40 lately. I hope this group of officers keeps coming back and spread the wealth! 35th is usually full of speeders.

  • Jason March 10, 2011 (8:02 pm)

I don’t see a large amount of aggressive drivers in seattle. Everywhere else in the world 15mph over is acceptable. Not in Seattle though where everyone drives 5 mph under. Granted, 92mph is a little too fast..

  • coffee March 10, 2011 (8:04 pm)

How about public shaming them? Billboard with a picture? Standing on the side of the road with a sign? I can’t tell you how many times a week someone tailgates me and flashes their lights. My other pet peeve, right on red AFTER stop….ha people barely slow down and think its ok to push their way into the traffic. I don’t slow down and I love my horn which I will follow you for a block honking.

  • Jason March 10, 2011 (8:18 pm)

Idiots over 40??!! Public shaming??!! Lighten up people. Just because the government sets a speed limit doesn’t make it right. They like to set these limits well below safe limits to generate more revenue.

  • WestSide45 March 10, 2011 (8:49 pm)

    Jason,
Following your logic, Montana set a speed limit as “Reasonable and prudent” for cars on I-90 many years ago (the limit has since been changed to 75). This allowed the public to drive as fast as they wanted to, resulting in a bang-up business for auto glass retailers. When the limit was unlimited, how was this “well below safe limits to generate more revenue”?

  • MindDriver March 10, 2011 (8:57 pm)

I came here to escape “10-15 over is acceptable” on the East coast. Many thanks for catching the speeders!

  • JEM March 10, 2011 (9:05 pm)

Like it or not, the speed limit is the speed limit. Do I exceed the limit? Yes, often go about 7 over. And if I get a ticket, I will suck it up and not complain. You know what the limit is, don’t be all outraged when you get caught.

  • Mn March 10, 2011 (9:08 pm)

Not slowing down to accommodate merging traffic “coffee”
You fall into the worst category of drivers after the speeders

  • mnb March 10, 2011 (9:30 pm)

As Nelson Muntz would say: “HAW haw!” (pointing finger at idiot driver).
    .
I wonder how much that trip over the bridge cost this speeder?

  • lenguamor March 10, 2011 (9:32 pm)

92 is more than ridiculous, it should be a CRIMINAL violation, not a civil one. I hope that guy gets hit hard with fines. That said, the speed on the bridge is artificially low; it should be 60, so idiots like Mr. 35mph don’t feel entitled to play passive-aggressive traffic cop.

  • Alistair March 10, 2011 (9:35 pm)

I’m all for encouraging safe driving – but the few occasions I’m driven to speed it’s to pass some wretched passive-aggressive driver (often chatting on their phone) who’s parked themselves in the left lane without passing anything, and is still doing 5 under the limit.

A little more control of frustration and speed, and a LOT more control of cursed LANE DISCIPLINE would make roads safer for all of us.

  • coffee March 10, 2011 (9:35 pm)

Mn I didn’t say anything about merging traffic. I said when I have the green why is it acceptable for a person with the red light to not stop and turn right on the red light. I make plenty of room for merging on the freeways.

  • mpento March 10, 2011 (9:40 pm)

If this speeding was done during the commute time I would be very impressed! We should all get video cameras for our cars and have a competition for catching the worst driver for the week. I suspect the same people would always win. Mmmmm funny how that works :)

  • sc March 10, 2011 (10:20 pm)

How do you report someone? I am tailgated all the time on the bridge (and I am not a slow poke).

  • dsa March 11, 2011 (12:48 am)

At some point, too much speed over the speed limit should become reckless driving

  • Rachael March 11, 2011 (12:55 am)

If they targeted everyone 10mph and over, they’d probably generate enough revenue to pay for some of these programs they want to cut out and have surplus left over to pay for the tunnel.

What it comes down to is the people speeding have a complete lack of regard for anyone else. You’ll probably get where you are going in a much nicer mood if you exercise a bit of (un)common courtesy for your fellow travelers.

As for the police, they should go after all speeders and not just the “aggressive” ones.

  • beegone March 11, 2011 (6:16 am)

I’m willing to bet a speed that egregious is some kind of crime. Like instead of a hefty fine you get a court date. Otherwise there is no difference with a small speeding ticket (say 15 over) vs straight up reckless endangerment (47 mph over!!). Good job SPD, I hope they keep these enforcements up and move on towards 35th.

  • Tonka March 11, 2011 (7:03 am)

that might be the west seattle bridge speed record.

  • Concerned Citizen March 11, 2011 (8:03 am)

What is with the speed demons in WS!!!??? I come down 35th every morning at 35 … people are passing me going over 50 and 60! It’s downright scary!!!!!

Sorry, comment time is over.
